Demographic and dietary profiles of high and low fat consumers in Australia

DESIGN--The study was undertaken using a postal survey format. A questionnaire was sent for self completion to a randomised sample of the adult population of two Australian states. PARTICIPANTS--Adult participants were selected randomly from the Electoral Rolls of the states of Victoria and South Australia. As…
Public perceptions of the role of dietary and other environmental factors in cancer causation or prevention

DESIGN--A postal survey was undertaken using a questionnaire to assess the public's knowledge of cancer morbidity and mortality and the role of lifestyle and genetic risk factors. Sociodemographic data were also collected. SETTING--The survey was completed in the state of South Australia. PARTICIPANTS--A r…
Port Pirie Cohort study
The Port Pirie Cohort Study is an ongoing prospective study of the relationship between exposure to environmental lead within a lead smelter community, and neuropsychological development in early childhood. Over 600 children, originally recruited during antenatal life, underwent serial blood lead estimations up to two years of age. Systematic interview information was collected on a range of variables, and formal developmental assessment (Bayley …
The Port Pirie cohort study
During a three-year period, 831 pregnant women in and around Port Pirie, South Australia--a lead smelter community with longstanding lead pollution--were enrolled in a cohort study to examine prospectively the relation between body lead burden and pregnancy outcome. Three-quarters of the enrolled women were residents of the Port Pirie municipality; the other women lived in adjacent towns and countryside. At 14-20 weeks' gestation, the Port Pirie …
A multi‐dimensional scaling exploration of ten year olds’ food combination rules
This exploratory investigation concerned the non‐random ways in which foods are served together in meals. The names of 40 common foods were arranged in pairs and presented randomly in sets of 39 pairs (per form) to each of 650 ten‐year‐olds. The children were asked to indicate “how well the foods in each pair would go together to form a nice meal,” using a three point scale. They also described the foods on sixteen adjectival scales. Multidimensi…
Australian ten year olds' perceptions of foods
Two studies were carried out into the relationships between paternal social status and ten year olds’ perceptions of food. The first examined 420 children's views of fourteen foods on eleven food properties. The influence of paternal social status was minimal. The second study, of 580 children, examined their views of 40 foods over 16 attributes. A randomized sample of foods was presented to each child on two forms. The results showed major diffe…
