  • Does Maternal Exposure to Secondhand Tobacco Smoke During Pregnancy Increase the Risk for Preterm or Small-for-Gestational Age Birth

Open Access•Adrienne T Hoyt, Mark A Canfield et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2018

  • Twinning and major birth defects, National Birth Defects Prevention Study, 1997–2007

    April L Dawson, Sarah C Tinker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2016•References: 25

BACKGROUND: Twinning has been associated with many types of birth defects, although previous studies have had inconsistent findings. Many studies lack information about potential confounders, particularly use of fertility treatment. Our objective was to assess the association between twinning and birth defects in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS). METHODS: We used data from the NBDPS, a population-based, case-control study of ma…

  • Development and implementation of the first national data quality standards for population-based birth defects surveillance programs in the United States

    Open Access•Marlene Anderka, T Cara et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

This initial, nation-wide assessment of data quality across U.S. population-based birth defects surveillance programs highlights areas for improvement. Using this information to identify strengths and weaknesses, the birth defects surveillance community, working through the NBDPN, can enhance and implement a consistent set of standards that can promote uniformity and enable surveillance programs to work towards improving the potential of these pr…

Lois Biener, Robert H Aseltine et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Cited by: 8•References: 5

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed smokers' reactions to a 25 cents cigarette tax imposed in Massachusetts. METHODS: A statewide telephone survey of 1783 adult smokers and 216 teenaged smokers was conducted. RESULTS: Among adult smokers, 3.5% reported that they had stopped smoking, owing in part to the price increase; 35% had considered quitting and 19% had attempted to cut the cost of smoking by switching to cheaper brands or cutting down. Among te…

  • Are preterm black infants larger than preterm white infants, or are they more misclassified?

    Open Access•Somsak Suthutvoravut, Carol J R Hogue et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1989

In birth certificate data for Massachusetts resident births from 1978 to 1982, 12–27% of births purportedly under 31 weeks of gestation were probably misclassified, i.e. had birthweight ≥2500g. Correcting for maldistribution of births removed 34% and 23%, respectively, of black and white births with reported gestational ages

  • WIC participation and pregnancy outcomes

Milton Kotelchuck, Janet B Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Cited by: 24•References: 8

The effects of WIC prenatal participation were examined using data from the Massachusetts Birth and Death Registry. The birth outcomes of 4,126 pregnant women who participated in the WIC program and gave birth in 1978 were compared to those of 4,126 women individually matched on maternal age, race, parity, education, and marital status who did not participate in WIC. WIC prenatal participants are at greater demographic risk for poor pregnancy out…
