  • Survivalism and Public Opinion on Criminality

    Stack, S Stack et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2010

Explanations of variability in public opinion on crime have drawn disproportionately from the literature on specific symbolic orientations including religious fundamentalism and racial prejudice. In contrast, this article hypothesizes that public opinion is linked to the strength of a general cultural axis of nations: survivalism vs. self-expressionism. Stack, S Stack•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2003•Cited by: 15•References: 2

A total of 293 findings from 42 studies on the impact of publicized suicide stories in the media on the incidence of suicide in the real world were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. Studies measuring the effect of either an entertainment or political celebrity suicide story were 14.3 times more likely to find a copycat effect than studies that did not. Studies based on a real as opposed to fictional story were 4.03 times more likely to un…

There are comparatively few studies on the politics of suicide and this is apparently the first on Australia. It is careful to control for some of the possible confounding variables such as GDP grow…

  • Country Music and Suicide -- Individual, Indirect, and Interaction Effects

    Stack, S Stack et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1995•References: 1

Previous work on country music and suicide has neglected individual-level data analysis of country music fans' suicide risk, use of an average annual country music exposure index, an analysis of indirect effects, and an assessment of interaction effects. The present article addresses these issues. First, country music fans are found to be at significantly higher risk of suicide than nonfans both in gun ownership and marital disruption. A signific…
