The experience of receiving smoking cessation services in individuals who smoke cigarettes in Taiwan
With an associated mortality of 8 million per year, the hazards of smoking make it one of the most concerning public health problems worldwide. To reduce the public health burden, smoking cessation programs have been implemented in various locations, including Taiwan. However, the experience of individuals receiving smoking cessation services remains poorly understood. In this study, we explored first-hand experience, feelings, and expectations o…
Psychological pathways of violent and non-violent criminals
Criminal behavior poses a significant threat to social security and public health, with notable psychological differences between violent and non-violent offenders. However, current research lacks a systematic investigation into multidimensional psychological variables and their interactions. This study explored differences in key psychological variables and their interactions between violent and non-violent offenders using network analysis and B…
Application of the DPSIR model in marine ecological environmental assessment
This study applies the DPSIR (Driving Forces-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) framework to evaluate the ecological safety of Anping Port, Taiwan, from 2015 to 2021. Using time series data, the study identifies key indicators, including water transparency, nitrogen oxides, and fuel oil consumption, that significantly affect the port's ecological health. The DPSIR model highlights the dominance of ‘Environmental policy,' ‘Environmental quality,' and…
Sleep patterns and smartphone use among left-behind children
This study reveals complex associations between sleep patterns, smartphone use, and depressive symptoms among left-behind children. The identified behavioral profiles provide insights into population heterogeneity and inform targeted intervention strategies. Findings emphasize the importance of addressing both sleep and technology use in mental health initiatives for this vulnerable population
Social support as a mediator between life events and non-suicidal self-injury
This study reveals that while social support serves as a crucial buffer against NSSI, its protective effect varies significantly between urban and rural students. Contrary to traditional resource-based assumptions, urban students demonstrated greater vulnerability to stress-induced reduction in social support. These findings suggest the need for targeted interventions that consider students' geographical backgrounds when developing support system…
A network and mediation analysis on the associations between family environment and suicidal ideation in adolescents in a psychiatric clinical setting
This study reveals the complex interplay between family environmental factors and psychiatric symptoms in adolescents, highlighting family relationship quality as a critical risk mechanism. These findings underscore the importance of family-centered interventions and public mental health policies to reduce suicidal ideation in adolescents
Gender differences in the relationship between alcohol use patterns and health-related quality of life in a population experiencing a recent surge in harmful alcohol use among females
Support for a hypothetical sugar-sweetened beverage tax in Taiwan
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are drinks that contain added sugar or sweeteners and provide calories with no additional nutrients, and some countries have imposed additional taxes on the SSBs to reduce consumption, which is considered an SSB tax policy. This study used a cross-sectional online survey to examine the patterns of public support for an SSB tax in Taiwan. The sample included 1617 adults aged ≥ 20 years, who answered the survey ques…
Trends in the use and nonmedical use of sedatives-hypnotics in the population aged 12 to 64 years in Taiwan
Background Many countries, including Taiwan, have tightened regulations on prescribing sedatives-hypnotics over the concern of their associated adverse health effects. However, it remains seldom investigated whether different age-sex strata have differential trends in national surveys over time for either the use or nonmedical use (NMU) of sedatives-hypnotics. Comparing Taiwan’s two national surveys in 2014 and 2018, we aimed to examine (1) the p…

Arsenic in Drinking Water and Incidences of Leukemia and Lymphoma
Arsenic in drinking water has been recognized as carcinogenic to humans and can cause solid cancers of lung, urinary bladder, and skin. Positive associations have also been reported between arsenic ingestion and cancers of kidney, liver and prostate. Nevertheless, arsenic trioxide has been used successfully in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Therefore, arsenic might play different roles in the carcinogenesis of solid cancers and he…
Gendered Impact of Age, Toilet Facilities, and Cooking Fuels on the Occurrence of Acute Respiratory Infections in Toddlers in Indonesia and the Philippines
The comparison of risk factors between male and female toddlers revealed different results in some variables, as follows: children aged under one year, dirty cooking fuels, and unavailable toilet facilities. The role of parents is fundamental in taking care of female toddlers, since they are more exposed to ARI at the age of under one year and are more prone to indoor air pollution from solid cooking fuels
Men’s decrease and women’s increase in harmful alcohol use from the 2014 to 2018 national surveys in Taiwan
Smoking from a Younger Age Is the Dominant Factor in the Incidence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
There are three factors of smoking behavior that influence COPD: smoking habit, initial smoking age and smoking duration. Of all factors, forming a smoking habit at the age of <15 years old has the biggest risk (OR = 12; CI = 1346-106,950)
Social Determinants of Diabetes-Related Preventable Hospitalization in Taiwan
Diabetes-Related Preventable Hospitalization (DRPH) has been identified as an important indicator of efficiency and quality of the health system and can be modified by social determinants. However, the spatial disparities, clustering, and relationships between DRPH and social determinants have rarely been investigated. Accordingly, this study examined the association of DRPH with area deprivation, densities of certificated diabetes health-promoti…
A national survey of ambient air pollution health literacy among adult residents of Taiwan
People in Taiwan had only moderate level of AAPHL; and covariates including education, living arrangement, marital status, and area of living were significantly associated with AAPHL. These covariates should be considered in future educational interventions aiming to improve the AAPHL in the community
Trends and Contributing Factors to Contraceptive Use in Kenya
Kenya is among the leading nations in family planning in Africa, having the first official nationwide family planning program in sub-Saharan Africa. However, Kenya is still one of the most highly populated countries in Africa with a population of more than 52 million. The objective of this study was to assess the trends and contributing factors of contraceptive use. We conducted a multi-wave cross-sectional study using both the demographic health…
Risk of Injury and Mortality among Driver Victims Involved in Single-Vehicle Crashes in Taiwan
Vehicle-type specific injury severity has rarely been investigated mainly because of a lack of such information in hospital-based studies that normally exclude those who are severely injured and die on the scene. No study has been conducted either on driver characteristics in single vehicle crashes in Taiwan according to vehicle type. This was the first population-based study aiming to describe demographic characteristics in association with vehi…
Urban-rural disparity in lower extremities amputation in patients with diabetes after nearly two decades of universal health Insurance in Taiwan
Although the universal health insurance has largely removed financial barriers to health care, the urban-rural disparity in LEA prevalence still exists in Taiwan after nearly two decades of the NHI program
Risk of 30-day mortality and its association with alcohol concentration level among driver victims of motor vehicle crashes
Background Although blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is undoubtedly associated with increased risk of injury among driver victims involved in motor vehicle crashes (MVCs), some studies noted that high BAC was associated with reduced risk of mortality after injury. In addition, most of the previous studies included only injured patients admitted, which may lead to potential selection bias arising from exclusion of those with minor injury and thos…
Association of Environmental Features and the Risk of Alzheimer’s Dementia in Older Adults
Little is known about the association between environmental features and the risk of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). This study aims to investigate the association of physical and social environments with the incidence of AD. We identified 12,401 newly diagnosed AD cases aged ≥65 years in 2010, with the same no. of matched controls from National Health Insurance claims in Taiwan. Environmental data were collected from government statistics including t…
Demographic and Urbanization Disparities of Liver Transplantation in Taiwan
Limited access to or receipt of liver transplantation (LT) may jeopardize survival of patients with end-stage liver diseases. Taiwan launched its National Health Insurance (NHI) program in 1995, which essentially removes financial barriers to health care. This study aims to investigate where there are still demographic and urbanization disparities of LT after 15 years of NHI program implementation. Data analyzed in this study were retrieved from …
Socioeconomic Inequality in One-Year Mortality of Elderly People with Hip Fracture in Taiwan
Hip fracture commonly results in considerable consequences in terms of disability, mortality, long-term institutional care and cost. Taiwan launched its universal health insurance coverage in 1995, which largely removes financial barriers to health care. A review of the healthy worker effect in occupational epidemiology
This review article aims to anatomize sources of the healthy worker effect (HWE) and to summarize advantages and limitations of several approaches frequently proposed to eliminate the HWE. Although the HWE is frequently addressed in the context of selection bias, our review suggests that the selection of occupational cohorts with advantageous health status would preferably be addressed as a source of confounding biases. The authors also conclude …
