Symptom-oriented network pharmacology revealed the mechanism of HuangQi-DanShen herb pair against cerebral ischemia coupled with comprehensive chemical characterization
ATHLOS Healthy Aging Scale score as the predictor of all-cause mortality in Poland and Czechia
Background: The ATHLOS consortium (Aging Trajectories of Health-Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies) used data from several aging cohorts to develop a novel scale measuring healthy aging comprehensively and globally (ATHLOS Healthy Aging Scale). In the present study, we assessed the predictive performance of the ATHLOS Healthy Aging Scale for all-cause mortality in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Data from the Polish and Czech HAPIEE …
Intersectional Perspective on Factors Influencing Healthy Ageing Amongst Older New Zealand Men
Little is known about how New Zealand men understand their health and wellbeing as they age and what are the determinants of their healthy ageing. Contiguous and exploratory sequential mixed methods study were conducted with the collection of both focus group and survey data. Methodologically, this abductive process was incorporated within an intersectional framework, providing a comprehensive picture of healthy aging in men across life stages an…
Adult children's education and trajectories of episodic memory among older parents in the United States of America
The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between adult children's education and older parents’ cognitive health, and the extent to which this relationship is moderated by parents’ own socio-economic and marital statuses. Data using Waves 5 (2000) to 13 (2016) are drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a nationally representative panel survey of individuals age 50 and above in the United States of America (USA). Older par…
The associations of physical incapacity and wealth with remaining in paid employment after age 60 in five middle-income and high-income countries
Previous studies on health and socio-economic determinants of later-life labour force participation have mainly come from high-income European countries and the United States of America (USA). Findings vary between studies due to different measures of socio-economic status and labour force outcomes. This study investigated longitudinal associations of physical incapacity and wealth with remaining in paid employment after age 60 in middle- and hig…
Prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia, and associated risk factors in the Czech Republic, Russia, Poland and Lithuania
Patterns of awareness, treatment and control rates of hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia differed by country. Efforts should be made in all four countries to control these conditions, including implementation of international guidelines in everyday practice to improve detection and effective management of these conditions
Comparing relationships between health-related behaviour clustering and episodic memory trajectories in the United States of America and England
HRB clustering was associated with trajectories of episodic memory in both the USA and England. The effect of HRB clustering on episodic memory seemed larger in England than in the USA. Our study highlighted the importance of being aware of the interconnections between health behaviours for a better understanding of how these behaviours affect cognitive health. Governments, particularly in England, could pay more attention to the adverse effects …
Educational gradients in all-cause mortality in two cohorts in the Czech Republic during the early stage of the postcommunist transition
OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether social gradient in all-cause mortality in the Czech Republic changed during the postcommunist transition by comparing two cohorts, recruited before and after the political changes in 1989. METHODS: Participants (aged 25-64 years) in two population surveys (n=2530 in 1985, n=2294 in 1992) were followed up for mortality for 15 years (291 and 281 deaths, respectively). Education was classified into attainment cate…
Comparing socio-economic inequalities in healthy ageing in the United States of America, England, China and Japan
Healthy ageing has become a popular topic worldwide. So far, a consensus measure of healthy ageing has not been reached; and no studies have compared the magnitude of socio-economic inequality in healthy ageing outside Europe. This study aims to create a universal measure of healthy ageing and compare socio-economic inequalities in healthy ageing in the United States of America (USA), England, China and Japan. We included 10,305 American, 6,590 E…
Socioeconomic inequalities in physical and cognitive functioning
BACKGROUND: Physical and cognitive functioning in older age follows a socioeconomic gradient but it is unclear whether the strength of the association differs between populations. Using harmonised data from an international collaboration of cohort studies, we assessed socioeconomic inequalities in physical and cognitive functioning and explored if the extent of inequalities varied across countries based on their economic strength or wealth distri…
Relationship between employment histories and frailty trajectories in later life
BACKGROUND: Given the acceleration of population ageing and policy changes to extend working lives, evidence is needed on the ability of older adults to work for longer. To understand more about the health impacts of work, this study examined the relationship between employment histories before retirement and trajectories of frailty thereafter. METHODS: The sample comprised 2765 women and 1621 men from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. We…
