Do hot spots of deprivation predict the rates of suicide within London boroughs
Geographical epidemiology, spatial analysis and geographical information systems
We provide a relatively non-technical glossary of terms and a description of the tools used in spatial or geographical epidemiology and associated geographical information systems. Statistical topics included cover adjustment and standardisation to allow for demographic and other background differences, data structures, data smoothing, spatial autocorrelation and spatial regression. We also discuss the rationale for geographical epidemiology and …
Ecological association between suicide rates and indices of deprivation in the north west region of England
Background and objective: Most published research on the ecological relationship between suicide rates and indices of deprivation uses only one level of population aggregation—for example, by local authorities. These ecological associations have been studied at both the local authority and the electoral ward level. Methods: Data on all deaths for which suicide or an open verdict was returned between 1996 and 1998 in the North West Government Offi…
The anomaly that finally went away
When Archie Cochrane, Fred Moore and I conceived of trying to relate mortality in developed countries to measures of health service provision little did we imagine that it would set a hare running 20 years into the future.1 To us this was an amusing correlational study in the spirit of McKeown2 and Illich3—those sceptics of medical prowess. That our work has been reprinted in two collections of epidemiological papers and also as a historical arti…
The life span of Methodist ministers
Obituaries have occasionally been used in epidemiological studies, 2 but their use gives rise to methodological problems. We aimed to highlight and investigate these problems in an historical cohort study of British Methodist ministers from two branches of the church. The Primitive Methodists came from a predominantly lower socioeconomic background, whereas the background of Wesleyan Methodists tended to be more privileged. So we aimed to examine…
Prioritising elective care
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To produce a priority list for purchasers to use when purchasing elective care in the speciality of orthopaedics so that efficiency in health care purchasing (that is, maximising the benefit per unit of resource available for the resident population) can be achieved. DESIGN: The study used cost utility analysis in the elective speciality of orthopaedics. The diagnostic groups in the study were chosen on the basis of those conditi…
