What are the public health implications of the life course perspective
During the past decades innovative research has shown that exposure to harmful events during pregnancy and early infancy ('the first 1000 days') has an impact on health at subsequent stages of the life course and even across generations. Recently it has been shown that even the pre-conception period is of outmost importance, and other scholars have made the case that the 1000 days should be extended to a period of 8000 days post-conception. The p…

Our objective was to explore the contribution of B 12 -source foods and maternal B 12 status during pregnancy to plasma B 12 concentrations. Design Maternal plasma B 12 concentrations were measured during pregnancy. Children’s dietary intakes and plasma B 12 concentrations were measured…
Body size and body composition
BACKGROUND: Indian babies are characterised by the 'thin-fat phenotype' which comprises a 'muscle-thin but adipose' body composition compared with European babies. This body phenotype is of concern because it is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We examined whether the 'thin-fat phenotype' persists through early childhood, comparing Indian children with white Caucasians in the UK at birth, infancy and child…
Associations of linear growth and relative weight gain during early life with adult health and human capital in countries of low and middle income
Risk of childhood undernutrition related to small-for-gestational age and preterm birth in low- and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries continue to experience a large burden of stunting; 148 million children were estimated to be stunted, around 30-40% of all children in 2011. In many of these countries, foetal growth restriction (FGR) is common, as is subsequent growth faltering in the first 2 years. Although there is agreement that stunting involves both prenatal and postnatal growth failure, the extent to which FGR contributes to stu…

Maternal and child undernutrition
Weight Gain in the First Two Years of Life Is an Important Predictor of Schooling Outcomes in Pooled Analyses from Five Birth Cohorts from Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Growth patterns in early childhood and final attained stature
Growth failure is cumulative, and short stature is associated with multiple indices of reduced human capital. Few studies have been able to address in a single analysis both consideration of the timing of growth failure and comparison across populations. We analyzed data from birth cohorts in Brazil, Guatemala, India, the Philippines, and South Africa ( n = 4,659). We used data on length at birth (available for three of the five cohorts), 12 mo, …
Breastfeeding duration, age of starting solids and high BMI risk and adiposity in Indian children
This study utilized data from a prospective birth cohort study on 568 Indian children, to determine whether a longer duration of breastfeeding and later introduction of solid feeding were associated with a reduced higher body mass index (BMI) and less adiposity. Main outcomes were high BMI (>90th within-cohort sex-specific BMI percentile) and sum of skinfold thickness (triceps and subscapular) at age 5. Main exposures were breastfeeding (six cate…

Diet patterns are associated with demographic factors and nutritional status in S outh I ndian children
The burden of non-communicable chronic disease (NCD) in India is increasing. Diet and body composition 'track' from childhood into adult life and contribute to the development of risk factors for NCD. Little is known about the diet patterns of Indian children. We aimed to identify diet patterns and study associations with body composition and socio-demographic factors in the Mysore Parthenon Study cohort. We collected anthropometric and demograph…
Testing the fetal overnutrition hypothesis; the relationship of maternal and paternal adiposity to adiposity, insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk factors in Indian children
Objective We aimed to test the fetal overnutrition hypothesis by comparing the associations of maternal and paternal adiposity (sum of skinfolds) with adiposity and cardiovascular risk factors in children. Design Children from a prospective birth cohort had anthropometry, fat percentage (bio-impedance), plasma glucose, insulin and lipid concentrations and blood pressure measured at 9·5 years of age. Detailed anthropometric measurements were recor…
OP63 Body Size and Body Composition
Background Indian children have been shown to be smaller in all body measurements compared with white Caucasian British children at birth, one and four years, but they show a particular pattern of smallness, with relative sparing of subcutaneous fat– the so-called ‘thin-fat’ phenotype. Recently, Indian children at age 6 years were found to have a higher body fat percentage from DXA measurements than white British children, despite a lower BMI. Ho…
