Quality of first antenatal care visits and perinatal outcomes
Antenatal care (ANC) is crucial for maternal and newborn health. Although ANC coverage has improved globally, ANC quality remains suboptimal. This study assessed the quality of first ANC visits and their association with perinatal outcomes. We used data from the eCohort study that collected longitudinal data on ANC utilization and quality until the end of pregnancy in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, and India. Perinatal outcomes of interest includ…
Co-creating community engagement and involvement strategies
Living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) presents significant healthcare and patient-level challenges, which are further compounded by fragmented and poorly coordinated healthcare systems, leading to difficulties in access, dissatisfaction with quality of services, non-engagement with treatment protocols and poor outcomes. Overcoming these barriers requires a strong and equitable primary healthcare system that prioritises people-centred …
Core outcome sets for trials of interventions to prevent and to treat multimorbidity in adults in low and middle-income countries
INTRODUCTION: The burden of multimorbidity is recognised increasingly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), creating a strong emphasis on the need for effective evidence-based interventions. Core outcome sets (COS) appropriate for the study of multimorbidity in LMICs do not presently exist. These are required to standardise reporting and contribute to a consistent and cohesive evidence-base to inform policy and practice. We describe the de…
The maternal and newborn health eCohort to track longitudinal care quality
The MNH eCohort was developed to fill gaps in maternal and newborn health (MNH) care quality measurement. In this paper, we describe the survey development process, recruitment strategy, data collection procedures, survey content and plans for analysis of the data generated by the study. We also compare the survey content to that of existing multi-country tools on MNH care quality. The eCohort is a longitudinal mixed-mode (in-person and phone) su…
Doubling Farmers’ Incomes in India by 2022
In 2016–2017, Indian government set a policy target of doubling farmers’ incomes by 2022. This article investigates farmers’ perspectives on this contentious policy. Results suggest that only 18% of farmers were aware of this policy. Most farmers blamed the government’s support, high cost of cultivation and low MSP for their inability to increase their farm profitability. While synthesizing farmers’ perspectives, past trends, and the debate among…
Evaluating bias with loss to follow-up in a community-based cohort
BACKGROUND: Retention of participants is a challenge in community-based longitudinal cohort studies. We aim to evaluate the factors associated with loss to follow-up and estimate attrition bias. METHODS: Data are from an ongoing cohort study, Center for cArdiometabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia (CARRS) in India (Delhi and Chennai). Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify sociodemographic factors associated with partial (a…
Epidemiological pattern of Covid-19 and its association with periodontal health in an urban Indian cohort
Background Studies have highlighted a possible influence of gingival and periodontal disease (PD) on COVID-19 risk and severity. However, the evidence is based on hospital-based studies and community-level data are sparse. Objectives We described the epidemiological pattern of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Delhi and evaluated the associations of gingival and PD with incident COVID-19 disease in a regionally representative urban Indian population. Metho…
Anxiety and depression among adult tobacco users during the Covid-19 restrictions in India
During COVID-19 lockdown, mental health of tobacco users (primarily women) was associated with food, housing and financial insecurity. The Indian Government rightly initiated several health, social and economic measures to shield the most vulnerable from COVID-19, including a ban on the sale of tobacco products. It is also necessary to prioritize universal health coverage, expanded social security net, tobacco cessation and mental health services…
Burden, patterns, and impact of multimorbidity in North India
The burden of multimorbidity was high in this young rural population, which portends significant adverse effects on their health and quality of life. The Indian health system should be reconfigured to address this emerging health priority holistically, by adopting a more integrated and sustainable model of care
The role of dairy in healthy and sustainable food systems
Moderate milk-producing states such as Andhra Pradesh will continue to develop their dairy industry through policy actions. Including communities in policy discussions through innovative methods like Photovoice can help to maximise the positive and minimise the negative role of dairy in evolving local food systems
Changes in take-home aerated soft drink purchases in urban India after the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST)
In India, a country currently with low aerated drink consumption, the implementation of GST was not associated with a reduction in aerated drink purchase in urban settings. Due to the lack of accurate and sufficiently detailed price data, it is not possible to say whether this finding is driven by prices not changing sufficiently. Furthermore, the impact of GST reform on industry practice (reformulation, marketing) and individual behaviour choice…
