Psychiatric symptoms at age 8 as predictors of specialized health service use for psychiatric disorders in late adolescence and early adulthood
Adult-reported conduct and emotional problems in children, but not ADHD symptoms, independently predicted mental health service use and any psychiatric diagnosis in late adolescence and early adulthood, emphasizing the need for early identification of childhood mental health problems. Similarly, child self-reports of depressive problems already at age 8 predicted adult outcomes. Our findings emphasize the importance of multi-informant assessment …
Educational level and the use of mental health services, psychotropic medication and psychotherapy among adults with a history of physician diagnosed mental disorders
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental disorders is increased among people of low socioeconomic status or educational level, but it remains unclear whether their access to treatment matches their increased need. AIMS: Our objective was to examine whether educational level as an indicator of socioeconomic status is associated with use of mental health services, psychotropic medication and psychotherapy in Finland. METHOD: Cross-sectional data from a…
The long‐term cost of childhood conduct problems
BACKGROUND: Commonly recognized childhood conduct problems often lead to costly problems in adulthood. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term cumulative cost of childhood conduct problems until the age of 30. The costs included inpatient care, nervous system medicine purchases, and criminal offences. METHODS: The study used population-based nationwide 1981 birth cohort data. Families and teachers assessed the conduct problems of the eight-yea…
Feeling Unsafe at School Among Adolescents in 13 Asian and European Countries
The findings emphasize the need to create safe educational environments for all students, based on positive relationships with teachers and peers. School-based interventions to prevent bullying and promote mental health should be a natural part of school safety promotion
Health behavior of working-aged Finns predicts self-reported life satisfaction in a population-based 9-years follow-up
Good health behavior has a long-term beneficial impact on subsequent life satisfaction. This knowledge could strengthen the motivation for improvement of health behavior particularly on an individual level but also on a policy level
Stroke and cardiovascular risk factors among working-aged Finnish migraineurs
Cardiovascular risk should be screened in the aging migraine population, and hormonal and other migraine-related risk factors should be considered, especially among women. Efficacious attack treatment with triptans should be offered to migraine patients who do not show contraindications
Nonsuicidal self-injury risk factors among adolescents in Japan
Few researchers have explored the prevalence and impact of risk factors of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in community-dwelling Japanese adolescents. We used a survey to assess NSSI-associated factors; somatic symptoms; and sleep, psychiatric, and eating problems in a sample of 1,840 Japanese 8th grade students. Associations were examined via logistic regression analyses. Among the students, 34.6% engaged in either self-hitting or self-cutting. A…
Post-traumatic Stress and Depressive Symptoms Among Adolescents After the 2015 Earthquake in Nepal
Few longitudinal studies have focused on mental health problems among adolescents after earthquakes. We investigated changes in post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and depressive symptoms from 18 to 31 months after the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and explored potential risk factors associated with the change in psychiatric symptoms. This study comprised of 515 adolescents, aged 11-17 years from two earthquake-affected areas, one severely affected …
Do Headache and Abdominal Pain in Childhood Predict Suicides and Severe Suicide Attempts? Finnish Nationwide 1981 Birth Cohort Study
Psychosocial factors associated with becoming a young father in Finland
Antisocial tendencies both in childhood and adolescence are associated with becoming a young father. They should be taken into consideration when designing preventive or supportive interventions
Parental eating attitudes and indicators of healthy eating in a longitudinal randomized dietary intervention trial (the STRIP study)
Objective To examine the effects of child-oriented dietary intervention on parental eating attitudes and dietary behaviour. Design In the prospective, randomized Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project for Children (the STRIP study), a cohort of Finnish families took part in a nutritional intervention trial focused on the quality of their children's fat intake since the age of 8 months. Health-related and hedonic eating attitudes …
Childhood adversities as a predictor of disability retirement
Background: There is a large body of research on adulthood risk factors for retirement due to disability, but studies on the effect of adverse childhood experiences are scarce. Aim: To examine whether adverse childhood experiences predict disability retirement. Methods: Data were derived from the Health and Social Support Study. The information was gathered from postal surveys in 1998 (baseline) and in 2003 (follow-up questionnaire). The analysed…
