Open Access•Ed Daly, Adrian J Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2022

Managing the health and wellbeing of full-time professional athletes is a multifaceted task. In elite high-performance environments, medical staff and strength training coaches attempt to identify improved methods to monitor player health. Monitoring player health could indicate potential injury risk and assist in adjustments to training and workload management. Measuring fatigue is a notable component of monitoring player readiness before and af…

  • Rethinking the Andes–Amazonia Divide

    Open Access•Adrian J Pearce, David G Beresford-Jones et al.•BOOK•Rethinking the Andes–Amazonia…•2020

Nowhere on Earth is there an ecological transformation so swift and so extreme as between the snow-line of the high Andes and the tropical rainforest of Amazonia. The different disciplines that research the human past in South America have long tended to treat these two great subzones of the continent as self-contained enough to be taken independently of each other. Objections have repeatedly been raised, however, to warn against imagining too sh…

  • Reindigenización y economía en los Andes, c. 1820-1870, desde la mirada europea

    Open Access•Adrian J Pearce, Adrian Pearce•ARTICLE•Historia Mexicana•2017•References: 21

  • Huancavelica 1563–1824: History and Historiography

    Adrian J Pearce, Adrian Pearce•ARTICLE•Colonial Latin American Review•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The colonial mines of Huancavelica in central Peru boasted unique status, as the sole significant colonial American source of mercury, the main catalyst in the production of silver. This importance notwithstanding, Huancavelica remains relatively little known, in part because its historiography lies widely dispersed among journals and edited collections. This article seeks to facilitate further research by reviewing all significant existing work …

  • History and Language in the Andes

Paul Heggarty, Adrian J Pearce•BOOK•History and Language in the Andes•2011

  • Reindigenization and Native Languages in Peru’s Long Nineteenth Century (1795–1940)

Open Access•Adrian J Pearce, Adrian Pearce•CHAPTER•History and Language in the Andes•2011

An important question in the language history of the Andes concerns the roots of the modern decline of Quechua—the dominant native language of Peru, and still today the largest indigenous language family of the Americas. Noting the excellent prospects for Quechua even under Spanish colonialism from the sixteenth to the late eighteenth centuries, distinguished linguists have posed the key question of when the change occurred that “brought about th…

  • Rescates and Anglo-Spanish Trade in the Caribbean during the French Revolutionary Wars, ca. 1797–1804

Open Access•Adrian J Pearce, Adrian Pearce•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2006

Rescates (ransoms) consisted of the repurchase by Spanish and Spanish American merchants of ships and cargoes taken as prizes during wartime and sold in the British West Indies. This is the first detailed study of the subject, drawing on archives in Britain, Spain and the Americas. It is argued that rescates typified a broader range of legal ruses designed to protect Anglo-Spanish trade in the Americas from both wartime disruption and customs int…

  • The Peruvian Population Census of 1725–1740

    Open Access•Adrian J Pearce, Adrian Pearce•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2001

The population census of 1725–1740 was one of the few general censuses to occur in Peru during the colonial period. The census left a mass of detailed demographic data recording a unique moment when the population of the viceroyalty stood at its lowest historical level. It was the centerpiece of a major body of viceregal reform that affected levels of Indian tribute and the mita labor draft and permanently changed the base population subject to b…

  • British Trade with the Spanish Colonies, 1788-1795

    Open Access•Adrian J Pearce, Adrian Pearce•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2001•Cited by: 2

British trade with colonial Spanish America was largely contraband, and detailed statistical data describing its value and character are notoriously scarce. This article presents what is very probably the only detailed survey of a major branch of the trade which exists for any period, describing the trade of the British colonies in the Caribbean and North America in the years 1788-1795. Data are given both for tonnage of shipping and for type and…
