  • The impact of redistributing power to disadvantaged families in Hungary

    Open Access•Karolina Kósa, B Coons et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2017

The Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) formulated recommendations along which health inequalities can be successfully tackled anywhere in the world. The situation of the Roma minority in Europe provides countless opportunities for the translation of these guidelines into action that should be guided by coherent and evidence-based strategies integrating lessons learned in smaller-scale field projects. Our paper describes the long-t…

  • Economic considerations and health in all policies initiatives

Open Access•Andrew D Pinto, Ágnes Molnár et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Our results are useful for elaborating propositions for use in realist multiple explanatory case studies. First, we propose that economic considerations are currently used primarily as a method by health sectors to promote and legitimize HiAP to non-health sectors with the goal of securing resources for HiAP. Second, allocating resources and making funding decisions regarding HiAP are inherently political acts that reflect tensions within governm…

  • Social welfare matters

    Open Access•Patricia O’campo, Patricia O'Campo et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2015

The recent global recession and concurrent rise in job loss makes unemployment insurance (UI) increasingly important to smooth patterns of consumption and keep households from experiencing extreme material poverty. In this paper, we undertake a realist review to produce a critical understanding of how and why UI policies impact on poverty and health in different welfare state contexts between 2000 and 2013. We relied on literature and expert inte…

Alix Freiler, Carles Muntaner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 20

Health in All Policies (HiAP) is becoming increasingly popular as a governmental strategy to improve population health by coordinating action across health and non-health sectors. A variety of intersectoral initiatives may be used in HiAP that frame health determinants as the bridge between policies and health outcomes. The purpose of this glossary is to present concepts and terms useful in understanding the implementation of HiAP as a cross-sect…

  • Health impact assessment of Roma housing policies in Central and Eastern Europe

Open Access•Ágnes Molnár, Balázs Ádám et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2012•References: 28

Marginalised Roma communities in European countries live in substandard housing conditions the improvement of which has been one of the major issues of the Decade of Roma Inclusion, the ongoing intergovernmental European Roma programme. The paper presents EU-funded health impact assessments of national Roma housing policies and programmes in 3 Central and Eastern European countries in light of the evaluation of a completed local project in a four…

  • Health impact assessment of quality wine production in Hungary

Open Access•B Adam, Ágnes Molnár et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2009

Alcohol-related health outcomes show strikingly high incidence in Hungary. The effects of alcohol consumption are influenced not only by the quantity, but also the quality of drinks; therefore, wine production can have an important effect on public health outcomes. Nevertheless, the Hungarian wine sector faces several vital problems and challenges influenced by the country's accession to the European Union and by the need for restructuring. A com…

BACKGROUND: During implementation of a community development project involving a severely disadvantaged Roma community, the community was threatened with eviction. Two scenarios, eviction with placement on the waiting list for social housing versus a replacement housing development, were identified and specified. A health impact assessment (HIA) was carried out to inform subsequent negotiations. AIMS: To assess the health effects of eviction in c…
