  • Midlife Psychological Distress Associated With Late-Life Brain Atrophy and White Matter Lesions

Lena Johansson, INGMAR SKOOG et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2012

OBJECTIVE: Long-standing psychological distress increases the risk of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease. The present study examines the relationship between midlife psychological distress and late-life brain atrophy and white matter lesions (WMLs), which are common findings on neuroimaging in elderly subjects. METHODS: A population-based sample of 1462 women, aged 38 to 60 years, was examined in 1968, with subsequent examinations in 1974, …

  • Smoking initiation and cessation in relation to body fat distribution based on data from a study of Swedish women

Lauren Lissner, Calle Bengtsson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 8

In a representative sample of Swedish women, smokers were significantly less obese than nonsmokers. However, a smoker was likely to have significantly more upper-body fat than a nonsmoker of similar body mass index. Women who quit smoking experienced less upper-body fat deposition than would be expected by their accompanying weight gain, suggesting that weight gained as a consequence of smoking cessation is not preferentially deposited in the reg…

  • Obesity, adipose tissue distribution and health in women—Results from a population study in Gothenburg, Sweden

Open Access•Leif Lapidus, Calle Bengtsson et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•1989•Cited by: 13•References: 12

  • Distribution of adipose tissue and risk of cardiovascular disease and death

Open Access•Leif Lapidus, Calle Bengtsson et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•1984

A longitudinal population study of 1462 women aged 38-60 was carried out in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1968-9. In univariate analysis the ratio of waist to hip circumference showed a significant positive association with the 12 year incidence of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke, and death. The association with incidence of myocardial infarction remained in multivariate analysis and was independent of age, body mass index, smoking habit,…

  • Obesity in relation to socioeconomic status. A population study of women in Göteborg, Sweden

Henry Noppa, Calle Bengtsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1980•Cited by: 12•References: 12

In a population sample of 1462 middle-aged women socioeconomic data were studied in relation to obesity, assessed by a body weight index. Education, annual income, and social class were negatively correlated with weight index (WI). Husband's social class was a stronger determinant of obesity in the woman than her own class. Age of husband and number of children were significantly correlated with WI. There was also a weak correlation between being…
