Child brains respond to climate change
Analyzing effect modifiers of the temperature-mortality relationship in the Paris region to identify social and environmental levers for more effective adaptation to heat
Adaptation to heat is a major challenge for the Paris region (France). Based on fine-scale data for the 1,287 municipalities of the region over 2000-2017, we analyzed (time-serie design) the temperature-mortality relationship by territories (urban, suburban, rural), age (15-64 and ≥ 65) and sex, and explored how it was modified by vegetation and socio-economic indicators. Heat was associated with an increased mortality risk for all territories, a…
Maternal Ambient Exposure to Atmospheric Pollutants during Pregnancy and Offspring Term Birth Weight in the Nationwide Elfe Cohort
Our results support an adverse effect of air pollutant exposure on TBW. We highlighted a larger effect of air pollutants on TBW among women living in rural areas compared to women living in urban areas
The Effect of Older Siblings on Language Development as a Function of Age Difference and Sex
The number of older siblings a child has is negatively correlated with the child’s verbal skills, perhaps because of competition for parents’ attention. In the current study, we examined the role of siblings’ sex and age gap as moderating factors, reasoning that they affect older siblings’ tendency to compensate for reduced parental attention. We hypothesized that children with an older sister have better language abilities than children with an …
Deciphering the Impact of Early-Life Exposures to Highly Variable Environmental Factors on Foetal and Child Health
In humans, studies based on Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept and targeting short half-lived chemicals, including many endocrine disruptors, generally assessed exposures from spot biospecimens. Effects of early-life exposure to atmospheric pollutants were reported, based on outdoor air pollution levels. For both exposure families, exposure misclassification is expected from these designs: for non-persistent chemicals, be…
Is atmospheric pollution exposure during pregnancy associated with individual and contextual characteristics? A nationwide study in France
BACKGROUND: Exposure to atmospheric pollutants is a danger for the health of pregnant mother and children. Our objective was to identify individual (socioeconomic and behavioural) and contextual factors associated with atmospheric pollution pregnancy exposure at the nationwide level. METHOD: (nitrogen dioxide) were estimated at the pregnancy home address from a dispersion model with 1 km resolution. We used classification and regression trees (CA…
Chronic Exposure to Fine Particles and Mortality
BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies have reported associations between fine particles (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm; PM2.5) and mortality. However, concerns have been raised regarding the sensitivity of the results to model specifications, lower exposures, and averaging time. OBJECTIVE: We addressed these issues using 11 additional years of follow-up of the Harvard Six Cities study, incorporating recent lower exposures. METHODS: We replicated the …
