  • Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Open Access•Nowell H Phelps, Rosie Singleton et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…

  • Musculoskeletal health and life-space mobility in older adults: Findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study

    Open Access•Gregorio Bevilacqua, Stefania D’Angelo et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2024•References: 4

This study explores the relationship between musculoskeletal conditions of ageing and life-space mobility (LSM) in 1110 community-dwelling older adults from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study. LSM is a novel measure which captures ability to mobilise within the home, locally and more widely. Among men, older age, care receipt, not driving a car, lower wellbeing, and reduced physical function were associated with lower LSM, while in women only driving…

  • Social isolation and loneliness as risk factors for the progression of frailty: The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

    Open Access•Catharine R Gale, Leo D Westbury et al.•ARTICLE•Age and Ageing•2018

Background: loneliness and social isolation have been associated with mortality and with functional decline in older people. We investigated whether loneliness or social isolation are associated with progression of frailty. Methods: participants were 2,817 people aged ≥60 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Loneliness was assessed at Wave 2 using the Revised UCLA scale (short version). A social isolation score at Wave 2 was derived fro…

  • Understanding poor health behaviours as predictors of different types of hospital admission in older people: Findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study

Holly E Syddall, Holly Syddall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 25

BACKGROUND: Rates of hospital admission are increasing, particularly among older people. Poor health behaviours cluster but their combined impact on risk of hospital admission among older people in the UK is unknown. METHODS: 2997 community-dwelling men and women (aged 59-73) participated in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS). We scored (from 0 to 4) number of poor health behaviours engaged in at baseline (1998-2004) out of: current smoking, hi…
