  • Variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease surveillance in Spain, 1993–2021

Open Access•Jesús de Pedro-Cuesta, Fernando J García López et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background: Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a fatal transmissible prion disorder attributed primarily to the ingestion of meat from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and it can also be transmitted through blood transfusions and occupational exposure in laboratories. As of July 2024, 233 deaths had been recorded in 12 countries, mostly in the United Kingdom (UK) and France. Objective: This study aimed to desc…

  • Vigilancia Y Respuesta a La Variante De Creutzfeldt-Jakob en España

    Open Access•Javier Almazán‐Isla, J Almazán-Isla et al.•ARTICLE•Gaceta Sanitaria•2025

  • Association of disability with mortality in the Spanish adult non-institutionalised population

    Open Access•Javier Damián, Alicia Padron-Monedero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2022•References: 15

BACKGROUND: There are scant studies focused on measuring the association between disability and all-cause mortality based on large representative national samples of the community-dwelling adult population; moreover, the number of such studies which also include cause-specific mortality is yet lower. METHODS: Longitudinal cohort study that used baseline data from 162 381 adults who participated in a countrywide disability survey (2008). A nationa…

  • Prevalence of and factors associated with homebound status among adults in urban and rural Spanish populations

    Open Access•Jesús de Pedro‐Cuesta, Laureano Negrón-Blanco et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The study shows that homebound status is a common problem in our setting, and that being disabled is its main determinant. Socio-demographic characteristics, barriers and chronic diseases can also be assumed to be playing a role in the onset of this condition, indicating the need for further research, including longitudinal studies on its incidence and associated factors

  • Prevalence and features of ICF-disability in Spain as captured by the 2008 National Disability Survey

    Open Access•Sarah Maierhofer, Javier Almazán-Isla et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The EDAD 2008 affords an insufficient data set to be ICF-framed when it comes to the Activity and Participation domains. Notwithstanding their unknown validity, ratings for available ICF domains may, however, be suitable for consideration under the ADL model of functional dependency, suggesting that there are approximately 500,000 persons suffering from severe/complete disability and 1,000,000 suffering from moderate disability, with half the lat…

  • Prevalence of disability in a composite ≥75 year-old population in Spain

    Open Access•Javier Virues-Ortega, Javier Virúes‐Ortega et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Disability is highly prevalent among the Spanish elderly. Sex- and age-specific variations of disability are associated with particular disability domains

  • Spatial distribution of Parkinson's disease mortality in Spain, 1989-1998, as a guide for focused aetiological research or health-care intervention

    Open Access•Jesús de Pedro-Cuesta, Eduard Rodrı́guez-Farré et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Municipal PD mortality in Spain was unevenly distributed. Patterns were roughly similar to reported provincial PD mortality and use of levodopa. While the overall pattern appears to result from spatially selective PD undiagnosis, and can not be ascribed to industrial emissions, it can not be excluded that selected "hot spots" reflect genetic factors and/or environmental exposures inducing parkinsonism. A few municipal populations, located in low-…

  • Human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in eleven countries

    Open Access•Jesús de Pedro-Cuesta, Jesús de Pedro‐Cuesta et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Considerable international variation in aetiological subtypes of human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies was evident over the observation period. With the exception of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in France and the United Kingdom, these differences persisted across time

  • Trends in scientific activity addressing transmissible spongiform encephalopathies

Open Access•Elías Sanz Casado, Elías Sanz-Casado et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

The study reveals a very high increase in scientific production. It is related also with the beginnings of research on bovine spongiform encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, with the establishment of progressive collaboration relationships and a reflection of public health concerns about this problem

  • Tissue classification for the epidemiological assessment of surgical transmission of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. A proposal on hypothetical risk levels

Open Access•Alberto Rábano, Jesús de Pedro-Cuesta et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2005

This classification can serve as a reference, both in our study and in further epidemiological research, for categorisation of surgical procedures in terms of risk level of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease acquisition
