  • Ideology of collaterality and its impact on minority language communities

    Open Access•Nicole Dołowy-Rybińska, Michał Kotnarowski et al.•ARTICLE•International Multilingual…•2026

A collateral language is a variety that is linguistically close to the dominant language and is therefore denied official recognition, irrespective of its level of development. The low prestige of collateral languages and the frequent view that they are not worthy of protection are closely linked to the ideology of collaterality: the perception of these languages and their communities not as distinct and independent, but as “incomplete” and subor…

Następnie przedstawione zostają różnorodne konteksty użycia pisanej formy śląszczyzny w przestrzeni publi…

  • Ideological debates around the script of collateral languages

    Nicole Dołowy-Rybińska, Maciej Mętrak•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Our paper discusses the modes of creating normalised orthographies for two collateral languages of Poland, Kashubian and Silesian. In both cases, the creation of a literary form is a way of raising their prestige and an argument for their legal recognition. While Kashubian has the status of a 'regional language' of Poland, Silesian is still contested despite large community support for its linguistic autonomy. We analyse how different orthography…
