  • Effects of Accent and Vowel Context on Thai Learners’ Perception of English Dental Fricatives

Open Access•Patchanok Kitikanan, Ho Ting Chak•ARTICLE•World Journal of English Language•2026

English dental fricatives /ð/ and /θ/ are known to pose persistent perceptual difficulties for Thai learners of English because these sounds do not exist in the Thai phonological system. In addition, variation in English accents and surrounding phonetic environments may further influence learners’ ability to perceive and distinguish these consonants accurately. This study investigates how Thai learners perceive the English dental fricatives /ð/ a…

    Open Access•Patchanok Kitikanan, Alex Ho-Cheong Leung•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2024•Cited by: 1

During the COVID‐19 epidemic, the effect of mask wearing on communication has been questioned and explored. However, the study on the impact of face mask wearing on L2 speech is still limited. The main goal of the present study was to explore the extent to which face masks affect interlocutors’ L2 speech perception. Factors that varied were face mask (no mask, transparent mask, and disposable face mask), presentation mode (audio only vs. audiovis…

Open Access•Qiandi Huang, Patchanok Kitikanan•ARTICLE•Theory and Practice in Language…•2022

L2 sound production might vary in accordance with factors such as the vowel context and L2 experience held. This study investigates the production of the English “sh” by L2 Thai learners via acoustic analysis. The target sounds in this study were those in the initial position in three vowel contexts: high, low and back. The data were drawn from 48 subjects who were Thai undergraduate students. This sample was divided between two groups: high-expe…

  • The Effect of L2 Experience on the Identification of British English Monophthongs by L2 Thai Learners

    Open Access•Patchanok Kitikanan•ARTICLE•Theory and Practice in Language…•2022

This paper investigates the ability of L2 Thai learners to identify eleven British English monophthongs /iː, ɪ, e, æ, ɒ, ɑː, ɔː, ʊ, uː, ʌ, ɜː/. Among these vowels, /æ/, /iː/, /uː/, /e/ and /ɔː/ are vowels that occur in both Thai and English phonological inventories (shared sounds) whereas the other six vowels occur only in English (non-shared sounds). The subjects were split into two groups of L2 Thai learners: high-experienced and low-experience…

  • The competence and warmth of Thai students’ attitudes towards varieties of English

Robert M Mckenzie, Patchanok Kitikanan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•2016•Cited by: 12•References: 52

Previous language attitude research indicates that presenting speech forms allows listeners to index information about and attach social meaning to the perceived group(s) of speakers. Despite the volume of research undertaken elsewhere in Asia, there appear to be no in-depth studies investigating Thai nationals’ evaluations of specific varieties of English speech. This large-scale study examines 204 Thai university students’ attitudes towards for…
