Vietnamese Australian children’s voice on community language schools
This qualitative study reports Vietnamese Australian children’s perspectives on their learning experiences at their community language schools. The study draws on interview data with three mothers and their four children (aged 10–12), who used to attend or are currently attending community language schools in the state of Victoria, Australia. Using Bourdieu's (Citation1986) notion of capital, the study explored the reciprocal relationships between family relationships (family social capital) and the …
Including children's voice in family language policy: An exploration of the tensions between mothers’ and children's language beliefs
This article discusses family language policy and the tensions between mothers’ and children's language beliefs in two Vietnamese immigrant families in Melbourne. These tensions have frequently been discussed from the parental perspective, but it is less common to include the children's voice. We draw on a larger in-depth qualitative study of family language policy in Vietnamese families living in Australia to explore the language beliefs of both…

This study explores the language habitus and practices in one Vietnamese immigrant family in Melbourne. It contributes to research on family language policy in multicultural contexts. Using a Bourdieusian framework to explore the interrelationships between language beliefs, practices and management in a nuanced way, the article discusses how the children's and adults' language beliefs are situated in their lived experiences as a result of their p…
