  • Socio-economic, environmental and health impacts of dietary transformation in Bangladesh

Open Access•Thijs de Lange, Michiel van Dijk et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

The transition to healthier diets might be accompanied by trade-offs that occur in other parts of the food system. In this study the trade-offs between socio-economic, environmental, and health indicators were analyzed in different dietary scenarios for Bangladesh between 2022 and 2050. We used a global economic simulation model with updated national food consumption data, extended with a footprint module to track environmental impacts through th…

  • Do Large Estates Benefit Smallholder Neighbours? Evidence from Malawi

Open Access•Julian Joseph, Michiel van Dijk et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2023

We examine spillovers from agricultural estates to Malawian smallholders within an econometric counterfactual framework. We consider economic spillovers such as income, as well as agrarian spillovers such as yields, harvests, and crop diversity. We identify long-run effects of large agricultural investments on small-scale farmers. For the location of large estates, we use a novel OpenStreetMap dataset, while data on smallholder’s stems from a hou…

  • How much multilateralism do we need? Effectiveness of unilateral agricultural mitigation efforts in the global context

Open Access•Stefan Frank, Peter Havlík et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Achieving climate neutrality in the European Union (EU) by 2050 will require substantial efforts across all economic sectors, including agriculture. At the same time, an ambitious unilateral EU agricultural mitigation policy is likely to have adverse effects on the sector and may have limited efficiency at global scale due to emission leakage to non-EU regions. To analyse the competitiveness of the EU's agricultural sector and potential non-CO 2 …

  • Co-designing Indus Water-Energy-Land Futures

Open Access•Yoshihide Wada, Adriano Vinca et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2019

The Indus River Basin covers an area of around 1 million square kilometers and connects four countries: Afghanistan, China, India, and Pakistan. More than 300 million people depend to some extent on the basin’s water, yet a growing population, increasing food and energy demands, climate change, and shifting monsoon patterns are exerting increasing pressure. Under these pressures, a “business as usual” (BAU) approach is no longer sustainable, and …

  • Comparing impacts of climate change and mitigation on global agriculture by 2050

Open Access•Hans Van Meijl, Peter Havlík et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Systematic model inter-comparison helps to narrow discrepancies in the analysis of the future impact of climate change on agricultural production. This paper presents a set of alternative scenarios by five global climate and agro-economic models. Covering integrated assessment (IMAGE), partial equilibrium (CAPRI, GLOBIOM, MAgPIE) and computable general equilibrium (MAGNET) models ensures a good coverage of biophysical and economic agricultural fe…

  • Incoherence between Tax and Development Policies: The case of the Netherlands

Francis Weyzig, Michiel van Dijk•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2009

This article discusses incoherence between tax and development policies, a relatively new area in the debate on policy coherence for development, using a case study of the Netherlands. Dutch business entities play a key role in tax avoidance structures of multinational corporations. We argue that the Dutch tax regime facilitates the avoidance of substantial amounts of tax revenues in developing countries when compared to the Dutch aid budget. As …
