Embodied Memory and Gendered Performance
This article examines the Bon Dance tradition as performed by Okinawan women in Hawaii, focusing on how gendered bodies become vehicles of cultural memory and identity within diasporic communities. Drawing on archival materials, ethnographic observation, and performance analysis, the study explores how traditional Okinawan dance, especially in the hands of women, negotiates cultural preservation and reinvention in a multicultural, postcolonial co…
Ethnography of the ‘Southern islands’
This study reexamines Arai Hakuseki’s Nantōshi ( Records of the Southern Islands , 1719) as more than a geographical description of the Ryukyuan Kingdom. It argues that Hakuseki’s text constitutes an early form of ethnographic knowledge production within the moral and bureaucratic order of Tokugawa Japan. By situating Nantōshi at the intersection of anthropology and the history of knowledge, the article explores how Edo-period intellectuals trans…

Medicine at the margins
This article explores the history of medicine in the Ryukyu Islands from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, positioning the archipelago within intersecting Chinese, Japanese and Western imperial orders. It argues that Ryukyuan medicine evolved as a hybrid system shaped by colonial marginality and transnational exchange. Through encounters with Chinese pharmacology, Japanese Kampō and local herbal traditions, practitioners localized and …

Guerrillas of the Curbside’
In Xiamen, urban space is highly contested between street vendors and Chengguan, China’s urban management and law enforcement agency, tasked with removing street vendors from urban space using an arsenal of punitive measures to assert absolute control. This article unearths the everyday resistance strategies used by street vendors to stay in urban spaces of Xiamen City, China. Grounded in Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the right to the city, James C.…
Cultural Fusion and Political Narratives in Katsushika Hokusai's Eight Views of Ryūkyū
Katsushika Hokusai's Eight Views of Ryūkyū displays a sophisticated blending of Chinese artistic motifs with the stylistic nuances of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. Produced at the height of Hokusai’s career, the series draws inspiration from the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang while portraying Ryukyu’s landscapes—despite Hokusai never visiting the islands. This study examines Hokusai’s reinterpretation of Chinese themes, his insertion of distinctly Japanese …
Community Bargaining with Urban Growth
The past several decades have seen China undergo a rapid urbanization process. During periods of economic prosperity, cities expropriate outlying lands, often villages, for economic development with the support of various local and national government programs designed to encourage urban expansion. However, the autonomy of the villages has not been paid enough attention. How does incorporation into an urban development zone affect the community i…
Outsiders to urban-centric growth
Urban-centric growth resulting from urban expansion and land redevelopment may result in rural–urban conflicts. Over time, in China, the affected social groups, such as urban residents in the poorer neighbourhoods, peri-urban farmers and urban population living in the peri-urban areas have found their voices in the academic literature, and some have even developed ways to negotiate compensation for the lost properties and livelihoods. This paper …
Production of boundaries by social service organizations
Social service organizations have developed quickly as a result of the Chinese government outsourcing services in recent years. The policy of government outsourcing services has been successful in developed countries and is transferred to China mainland. However, there are critical differences between China and these areas. The precondition for success in outsourcing services in Western countries is that the nonprofit organizations are relatively…
