Toxic Affects
In this paper, I draw on fieldwork in the Hewizah Marshes, Southern Iraq, and engage with Mel Chen’s notion of “toxic affects” along with literature on the slow temporalities of violence under capitalism to conceptualize toxicity as carceral. In this paper, I use Tahrir Square as a case study to examine the significance of space to Iraq’s October Revolution. I draw on the work of Henri Lefebvre to argue that the revolution in Tahrir Square was a response to the degradation of space in Baghdad after 2003 and delineate how protesters used space tactically to alter the dynamics of contention in their favour. This article uses Margaret Somers’ and Charles Tilly’s work on discursive approaches to identity to argue that failures in Iraq’s sectarian power-sharing system, Al Muhasasa Al Ta’ifia, have led to the transformation of identity in the country. This is demonstrated by the emergence of a unitary nationalist protest movement, which has called for a civic state, as captured by the idea of Mawatana.
