  • Fearing Iran Collectively Through the NCRI

    Open Access•Sina Emami, Mohammad Samiei•ARTICLE•Middle East Critique•2026

This article analyzes the transformation of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) through its political front, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), focusing on its shift from an anti-imperialist guerrilla group to a prominent diasporic actor advancing Iranophobic narratives in Western policy circles. Becoming an Iranophobic nexus through the deliberate mimicry of dominant Western discourses portraying Iran as an excepti…

  • Hypocrisy & Norm Enforcement: US Responses to Chemical Weapons Allegations against Iraq and Syria

    Mohammad Samiei, Janice Webster•ARTICLE•Middle East Critique•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The use of chemical weapons (CW) by Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War appears to have been subject to far less decisive US responses than similar accusations against Syria during the Syrian civil war. However, the two instances have not yet been subject to direct scholarly comparison. This article treats the Iraqi and Syrian instances as two distinct cases and compares US actions to prevent, investigate and deter CW use on each occasion. After demons…

  • Devil on the doorstep v. bandits in the backyard: Iranian and American theory-laden perceptions and judgements during three US-led Middle East operations

    Mohammad Samiei, Janice Webster•ARTICLE•Contemporary Politics•2023•References: 6

This article employs conceptual tools from the philosophy of science to shed new light on prolonged Iran-US hostility. Iranian and American elites evidently have negative attitudes towards the other nation, but these attitudes lack systematic and theoretical analysis. We apply the post-positivist concepts of theory-laden perception and judgement to anticipate the impact of established attitudes on foreign policy experts. After considering the cog…

  • Neo-Orientalism? The relationship between the West and Islam in our globalised world

    Mohammad Samiei•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2010•Cited by: 5

Orientalism, as Edward Said used the term, can be defined as an ideology which promotes the ‘West-and-Islam’ dualism and the idea that ‘Others are less human’. Since Said first published his ideas in 1978, however, the world seems to have become much more interdependent and political interrelations between the West and Islam have changed dramatically. Consequently this dualism, though more or less in place, has been influenced by escalating waves…
