Skateboarding memories and social (in)cohesion
In this article, we investigate how Swedish ageing male and female skateboarders construct their subcultural past, present, and future, and how this is mediated. We are especially interested in how research participants use niche media and negotiate the subculture’s images of risk and youth. We pay special attention to how cultural memory is embodied, including how gendered and aged bodies matter in negotiating subcultural memory and belonging. B…
The politics of constructing television audiences
This article seeks to analyze audience constructions in Swedish policy documents dealing with televised media from 2012 to the present. The period analyzed has been characterized by changes in Swedish media policy due to new technology, neoliberal governing ideas, and globalization. Further, debates about media policy have recently become polarized, and longstanding ideals of diversity, gender equality, and inclusion have been challenged. The art…

Markets as free speech providers and political resignation
In Sweden, the government has been reluctant to regulate streaming platforms, including the measures in the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive, which aim to maintain domestic and European productions. This article investigates what values are mobilized to legitimate the (non)regulation of streaming platforms in Sweden and what this means for democratic deliberation about platforms, content and culture. Building on policy documents and in-dep…
"I think women can do anything"
This article considers Mulvey's male gaze in today's postfeminist media culture in the latest remake of Charlie's Angels. Male gaze is analyzed as form, as production ecology, and as narrative. Since the inception of Charlie's Angels in the 1970s, the TV and feature film franchise has tried to balance feminist concerns with notions of femininity, in more and less successful ways. Although the 2000 remake of Charlie's Angels could be considered as…
Text/Author/Audience
In an effort to expand the traditional focus on film texts within film studies, case studies within New Film History have increasingly drawn attention to the structures and processes that determine film as medium and as social institution. Building on this, New Cinema History (NCH) focuses more radically on cinema as a social and cultural institution and its importance in everyday life. The central claim of this article is that this move away fro…
Re-conceptualizing Ingmar Bergman’s status as auteur du cinema
Why is it that some film directors become and remain central in the reception of their works and others do not? Classical auteur theory suggests the answer lies in the personality of the director. In this article, we explore and re-conceptualize the status of auteur du cinema Ingmar Bergman, Swedish film director. In line with Dyer’s gap between the institution and the audience, we explore Bergman’s self-fashioning through his own published writi…
