  • Borrowed soundtracks

    Serkan Şavk•ARTICLE•Continuum•2024•References: 4

In this article, my goal is to reveal the importance and potential of global history, an approach that is generally neglected in media and film history literature. The main characteristics of global history are de-centralizing history, taking a wide spatial and temporal perspective, avoiding Eurocentric and nationalist optics, and explaining patterns of causalities behind connections. I begin by explaining global history before presenting the dif…

  • The Growth of the Turkish Film Industry and the Death of Suphi Kaner

Serkan Şavk•ARTICLE•Historical Journal Of Film Radio…•2024

This article focuses on the death of Suphi Kaner by suicide in 1963, an incident that overlaps with the rapid growth of the domestic film industry in Turkey. Kaner’s tragic death is discussed in popular literature solely in relation to his alcohol addiction, his possible depression, and his inability to cope with sudden stardom, leaving almost unmentioned the key role of the boycott call of the Producers Association against him. In 1963, the powe…

In this review article, I focus on the online portal of Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cinema. This portal which provides open access to the institution’s film archive contains very important materials about the cultural, social, and political history of Turkey and the region. After introducing the main features of the portal, I reflect on the historical importance of its content. I also make comparisons with simi…

  • Doors, privacy and the public sphere

    Open Access•Serkan Şavk•ARTICLE•Urban History•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The aim of this article is to offer a new conceptual framework for the study of various spaces in Istanbul during the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries. I contend that rather than the sharp distinction manifested with the public–private dichotomy, we need to focus on gradations of privacy. I offer qāpū and bāb as two new concepts borrowed from the period's own repertoire for representing the macro and micro ends of the spatial gradation. T…

  • Mapping Yeşilçam

    Open Access•Serkan Şavk, Burak Dogu•ARTICLE•CINEJ Cinema Journal•2021

Turkey’s Yeşilçam film industry produced more than 5500 films during its lifetime of 40 years. The industry had a unique narrative approach shaped around its economic model, Turkey’s ambivalent connection with modernization and the country’s domestic culture. Yet, particular characteristic qualities of the industry remained rather limited up until the last decade, in which vast databases were built up as a consequence of the digital turn. In this…
