Exploring the Role of Governance on Poverty in Malaysia
Poverty alleviation is a global concern and an essential element for fostering inclusive growth and reducing inequities. This condition inspired the authors to explore the role of governance in poverty, specifically focused on Malaysia. The current study employed the Bootstrapped Autoregressive Distributed Lag (BARDL) technique on data series collected from 1997 to 2022. The results revealed that governance plays a critical role in reducing pover…
Analyzing monetary policies and bank credit in Indonesia’s provincial clusters amidst Covid-19 pandemic
This research investigates the impact of monetary policy instruments employed by the Bank of Indonesia (BI), including reserve requirement (GWM), policy rate, and loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, on bank credit by sector in Indonesia. We utilize FMOLS and DOLS techniques to estimate the effects of policy instruments and COVID-19 variables on bank credit across six clusters of provinces. Our findings indicate that the GWM exhibits a negative impact, whi…
Can oil prices predict the direction of exchange rate movements? An empirical and economic analysis for the case of India
This study investigates whether oil prices have enough predictive information to predict the direction of the movement of exchange rate by examining the type of cointegration relationship between exchange rate and oil prices in India between 1991Q1 and 2013Q1. Our findings suggest the existence of cointegration relationship between exchange rate and oil prices using both Engle–Granger two-step cointegration test and Johansen cointegration test. U…
Dynamic Linkages and Volatility Transmissions between Macroeconomic Uncertainty and Performance
In this article, we examine the time-varying linkages and volatility transmissions between macroeconomic uncertainty and macroeconomic performance in four South Asian countries over the last 20–30 years. Through the lens of bivariate GARCH family models supplemented with two-step procedure, we arrive at several important conclusions. First, there is an overwhelming support for the Friedman–Ball hypothesis that higher inflation leads to inflation …
The impact of human development on natural disaster fatalities and damage
Countries with high levels of human development should be able to reduce the impact of natural disasters in terms of the total numbers of people killed and affected, and damage. In this study we investigate the impact of human development indicators such as income per capita and human capital (education level) on natural disaster fatalities (total deaths, total affected and total economic losses) in 79 selected countries. Using dynamic panel data…
Are business forecasts of the construction sector rational? Survey-based evidence from Malaysia
This paper extends the direct measure to business expectations in assessing the doctrine of forecast rationality in the contemporary environment of Malaysia’s construction sector. The survey’s expectational series on business operational forecasts across the period 1990 to 2010 is inconsistent with Muth’s concept of rational expectations. Although strict rationality failed to be evidenced, weakly rational conduct can be observed in capital expend…

Measuring the economic impacts of recent oil price shocks on oil-dependent economy
This paper examines the economy-wide impacts of recent oil price shocks on the Malaysian economy. To achieve this objective, an integrated methodological framework that combines econometric and input–output models is utilized to assess the impacts of an oil price shock on tax revenues, employment, labor income and gross domestic product (GDP). Our results reveal that the recent oil price shocks significantly affects these macroeconomic variables.…
The impact of forced mergers and acquisitions on banks’ total factor productivity
In the present paper, we employ alternative techniques to examine the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the total factor productivity of Malaysian banks. These alternative techniques extend from the use of non-parametric ‘frontier’-oriented Malmquist productivity index (MPI) and central tendency ordinary least square (OLS) and fixed effects (FE) panel regression methods. We find that Malaysian banks have exhibited a higher mean total factor p…
Developments in the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector
In the mid-1990s, East Asian countries have experienced severe financial crisis that were followed by deep economic downturns. A variety of methodologies have been used to explain the Asian financial crisis. However, the impact of the Asian financial crisis of 1997 on the efficiency of the banking sector has not been studied yet. The present article attempts to provide new empirical evidence on the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector aroun…
Has economic freedom fostered bank performance? Panel evidence from China
The impact of economic freedom on the well-being of the economy has been widely documented. Noticeably absent from the literature is empirical evidence on the impact of economic freedom on the banking sector. This article employs data on the Chinese banking sector and provides for the first time empirical evidence on the impact of economic freedom. We find evidence supporting far greater freedom for entrepreneurs to start businesses. The empirica…
Does Financial Development Cause Economic Growth? A Panel Data Dynamic Analysis for the Asian Developing Countries
This paper examines the causal relationship between financial development and economic growth of the Asian developing countries from a panel data perspective and uses the system GMM technique developed by Arellano & Bover (1995) Arellano, M. and Bover, O. 1995. Another look at the instrumental variable estimation of error-component models. Journal of Econometrics, 68: 5–27. [CROSSREF][CSA] [Google Scholar] and Blundell & Bond (1998) Blundell, R. …
