Inter-Cohort Differences in Income over the Life Course
Income trajectories have diverged across birth cohorts in many Western countries, indicating that changing structural conditions may have altered income development over time. However, it is not well understood how inter-cohort variations in social and economic factors—such as education, labor markets, and welfare transfers—have shaped opportunities and constraints, contributing to inter-cohort income differences. Using total-population registers…
Do Red-Flagged Clients Exit Social Assistance Earlier than Others? The Case of the Finnish Social Assistance System
We examine an early ‘red flag system’ in the Finnish social assistance system and its efficiency in reducing the length of social assistance spells. We utilise the age-threshold in the policy that requires notifying social services on beneficiaries under twenty-five years of age after four months of social assistance receipt. Using monthly administrative data covering all twenty-three to twenty-six-year-old social assistance beneficiaries in Finl…
Assessing health gradient with different equivalence scales for household income – A sensitivity analysis
Research on health inequalities shows considerable variation in health by socioeconomic position regardless of measurement. Income level is among the most commonly used indicators to measure the social gradient in health. The income gradient in health may, however, vary according to what aspect of health is studied but equally it may depend on how income is measured. The traditional approach of measuring income is to use household income and to m…
Social assistance trajectories among young adults in Finland: What are the determinants of welfare dependency
Social assistance receipt is typical among young adults, but the long‐term trajectories of social assistance receipt have been less studied. We use Finnish population register data to study the kinds of social assistance trajectories found among young adults. We also analyze how individual and family characteristics are associated with the likelihood of following different social assistance trajectories. Individuals are followed from the age of 1…
Poverty Reduction Effects of Taxation and Benefit Policies in Finland, 1993–2013
In this article we estimate counterfactual poverty rates in order to evaluate the impact of changes in taxation and benefits on the increase of the poverty risk rate in Finland between 1993 and 2010. Household disposable incomes are simulated by using the households from the 2010 data, but varying the annual taxation and benefits for the years 1993–2013. Benefit cuts after the 1990s depression had a rather modest impact on poverty risk rates but …
Trends in the Intergenerational Transmission of Social Assistance in the Nordic Countries in the 2000s
This study considered trends in the intergenerational transmission of social assistance (SA) among young adults in Finland, Norway and Sweden during the 2000s. Comparable administrative register data-sets enabled us to compare year by year the social assistance recipiency of 20-year-old adults in the period 1999–2008, together with information on their parents' social assistance recipiency at the time when those young adults were aged 16 years. T…
Social background and life-course risks as determinants of social assistance receipt among young adults in Sweden, Norway and Finland
We analyse the determinants of social assistance receipt among young adults in three Nordic countries, focusing on social-background and life-course events during early adulthood. We ask whether they are related differently to short-term and long-term receipt. Short-term poverty could be more individualized than long-term poverty which can be expected to be more strongly related to social background. We applied generalized ordinal logit modelling…
Unemployment and economic security for young adults in F inland, N orway and S weden: From unemployment protection to poverty relief
In this study, we investigated if there has been a displacement in the type and coverage of welfare services available for young unemployed adults in F inland, N orway and S weden over the last two decades. This question is important because a number of studies have argued that the generous unemployment benefits and extensive labour market intervention found in the N ordic welfare states shield young people from the most severe consequences of ec…
Social Mobility over Three Generations in Finland, 1950-2000
We modelled social mobility over three generations in Finland from 1950 to 2000. From the 1950 population census sample, and consequent censuses, we constructed 57,585 three-generation lineages. A three-dimensional mobility table, containing eight layers—one for each grandmother and -father, son and daughter, and grandson and -daughter lineage—was built using the Erikson–Goldthorpe class schema. The social inheritance process was found to be very…
Intergenerational Transmission of Poverty in Finland in the 1990S
The focus of this study is to investigate whether there are links between social mobility and poverty from the viewpoint of the intergenerational transmission of poverty. The context for the study is the economic crisis of the early 1990s in Finland. The study seeks answers to questions such as whether there were changes in the intergenerational transmission of poverty during the first half of the 1990s and whether the intergenerational transmiss…
