Scaling home designs for healthy cognitive ageing: A realist evaluation perspective
We present an empirically grounded theory of change (ToC) to support delivery at scale of home design for healthy cognitive ageing. Using a realist evaluation lens, we analyse how contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes (CMO) identified in the ‘Designing homes for healthy cognitive ageing’ (DesHCA) research shape scalability. Design principles and features were co-produced with older adults and housing professionals through VR-supported workshops, and…
Othering Older People’s Housing: Gaming Ageing to Support Future-Planning
The 'othering' of ageing is linked to an integrated process of ageism and hinders planning for the future for both individuals and practitioners delivering housing and health services. This paper aims to explore how creative interventions can help personalise, exchange knowledge and lead to system changes that tackle the 'othering' of ageing. The Designing Homes for Healthy Cognitive Ageing (DesHCA) project offers new and creative insights throug…
Retrenchment without effect? Exploring the link between pension reforms and public pension adequacy of new retirees in seven European countries (1993–2020)
Since the 1980s population ageing and economic change has led to cost-containing pension reforms in many industrialized countries. Research has focused on the institutional side of such reforms, but the impact of cost containment policies for real retirees’ pensions remains under-researched. This study addresses this gap. We use the change in projected pension replacement rates for average earners established by the OECD (2002–2019) as an indicat…
Understanding the intersectional stigma of ageing, disability, and place: A systematic literature mapping review
Stigma is a key concept for social scientists interested in how certain groups in society are judged and treated negatively. Within housing studies this scholarship reflects longstanding interests within the discipline regarding the spatial impacts of social and urban policies on both people, and the places in which they live. We augment these debates by advocating for a more intersectional understanding of how stigma is shaped by identity. It pr…
Housing Design Evaluation Research for People Living with Cognitive Change: A Systematic Literature Review
Research suggests that improvements to home design may enable us to live better with cognitive change as we age. However, few innovations have been fully evaluated. The paper systematically reviews 47 items of evaluative literature. Research design and quality are varied. Qualitative analysis of literature demonstrates the need for a holistic approach that includes older people’s diverse perspectives, examples of promising practice that responds …
It's not late entry: Human capital, welfare states and the pension penalty experienced by post-war migrants who retired in the European Economic Area
Since the 2000s, migration within and into the European Economic Area (EEA) has increased significantly. Some migrants will retire in their destination countries. This makes questions about their retirement protection increasingly relevant for social policy. To address this, we examine past experience. Using the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we compared the pensions of post-1945 migrants, who settled in their host cou…
An examination of the role of domestic destinations in satisfying holiday demands
Multilevel modelling of Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) trips in Greater Manchester based on area-wide socio-economic data
Providing public transport in areas of low demand has long proved to be a challenge to policy makers and practitioners. With the developing economic, social and environmental trends, there is pressure for alternative solutions to the policy of subsidising conventional bus services. One potential solution is to adopt more flexible routes and/or timetables to better match the required demand. Therefore such 'on demand' or 'Demand Responsive Transpo…
