Advancing programme processes and connections
Older adults have long been considered critical actors in developing and implementing age-friendly community (AFC) initiatives. However, there has been limited empirical research on the ways they advance AFC implementation, especially in terms of their participation through AFC leadership roles ( e.g. committee chairs, work group members). This study addresses this critical gap by exploring the functions that older adults exhibit in AFC implement…
Occupational autonomy and cognitive function
These findings suggest that occupational autonomy is cognitively protective. However, it cannot ameliorate cognitive losses that commonly occur after midlife for those with no degree. Future research is needed to identify modifiable factors that reduce cognitive losses after midlife for those with low educational attainment
Mental health help-seeking among U.S. Asian older adults
This study synthesizes the mental health help-seeking among different groups of U.S. Asian older adults and its contributing factors. Integrating the Health Belief Model with the Ecological Perspective and following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Reviewer’s framework, 16 studies were included in this scoping review. Fewer studies examined informal versus formal help-seeking among Asian older adults. Additionally, intrapersonal and service fact…
Social Network as an Engagement Approach in Child Maltreatment Prevention Programs
While prevention programs improve parenting and reduce maltreatment risks, engaging parents, particularly from marginalized populations, remains challenging. This scoping review systematically examines the implementation of social network strategy as an engagement approach and evaluates its impact on engagement. A systematic search of relevant databases identified 18 eligible studies conducted between 2010 and 2023. These studies utilized social …
Sex differences in the association between occupational environment exposures and cognitive function outcomes in later life
Findings suggest that differences in how men and women respond to occupational exposures may be an important factor contributing to sex-based disparities in later-life cognitive outcomes. Future research is needed to determine how both work and non-work exposures across the life course differently shape long-term cognitive health outcomes in men and women in later life
Education, Occupational Environment, and Cognitive Function in Later Life
Objectives Education is among the most robust predictors of cognitive health outcomes in later life. However, few studies have comprehensively evaluated whether and how much of this effect is explained by occupational exposures. This study aims to determine if and how much pre-retirement occupational exposures (occurring before age 60) mediate the association between education and cognitive function at age 65+. Methods We use data drawn from the …
Does network homophily persist in multicultural volunteering programs? Results from an Exponential Random Graph Model
Few studies examined the social network structures within multicultural volunteer programs for low-income diverse older adults, making it unclear how diverse older adults establish social connections beyond their co-ethnic community. This study aims to identify the social network structures within a Senior Companion Program (SCP), a multicultural low-income volunteer program in a Midwestern Metropolitan area in the United States. Data were collec…
Analysing the travel behaviour of older adults
In recent years, various authorities launched projects that aim to make their cities more age-friendly. Designing age-friendly cities is a complex and context-dependent process that requires clear implementation guidelines for policy makers. As one of the eight domains of age-friendly cities, transportation is a critical component of making our cities more liveable for older adults and their families. This paper contributes to the literature by e…
Trust in physicians, health insurance, and health care utilization among Chinese older immigrants
TIP played an important role in facilitating primary care visits among Chinese older immigrants regardless of insurance status. Additionally, TIP facilitated the ER visit and hospitalization among uninsured Chinese older immigrants
Age-friendly communities and perceived disconnectedness
Objective: To examine the effect of access to outdoor space and buildings and social or community events on elders' perceived disconnectedness. Method: Data were from a representative survey conducted as part of an age-friendly community initiative in a large midwestern city in the United States. Hierarchical logistic regression was employed to examine the relationships between environment, engagement, and connection. Results: Having access to ra…
