Involuntary relocation and safe transfer of care home residents
Few studies explore the application of literature on care home closures in practice or how it can influence residents' experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate from multiple perspectives how a protocol, designed by a local council for the involuntary relocation and safe transfer of older adult residents, was adhered to and the influence that the protocol had on the experiences of residents who relocated from two care homes. Interview…
Evaluating community health services
The best way to evaluate community health services remains the subject of much argument and debate. This paper explores difficulties encountered in the management of a randomized controlled trial of physiotherapy in a primary health care setting, and discusses conflicts which arose when carrying out a time limited commissioned evaluation of a carer support scheme. Although randomized controlled trials are still regarded as the gold standard in me…
Shoestrings and Bricolage
An earlier version of this paper appeared as the appendix to our recent book, An Intimate Loneliness: Supporting Bereaved Parents and Children (G. Riches & P. Dawson, 2000). In it, we attempt to offer a brief history of the processes we have gone through in taking a simple research question, developing it into a practical proposal, experiencing how it shifted as we explored it, accounting for the changes that our broader reading imposed on our pe…
Caring for a relative with dementia
The purpose of this study was to discover how carers of dementia sufferers deal with fall risk. Using grounded theory techniques, data were collected by a focus group and interviews with carers. A core category of being on the edge of chaos emerged, in which a fall represented moving into chaos. Carers used multiple strategies to avoid falls and maintain their precarious position on the brink of chaos, by creating order in their lives. They selec…
Communities of feeling
The death of an offspring presents parents and other family members with experiences which may isolate them from some of the social relations with which they were previously involved. Published research indicates substantial differences in the ways in which many men and women cope with grief and provides evidence of isolation within the marital relationship itself. This paper reports on research into the experiences of parents whose children have…
Wives of Institutionalized Elderly Men
Although much recent research has focused on family caregivers to the community-dwelling impaired elderly, little research has examined the experiences of family caregivers once the older relative enters a long-term care institution. This article focuses on the experiences of wives whose husbands have entered a long-term care institution. This process is conceptualized as a life course transition to quasi-widowhood, a term intended to capture the…
