Co‐Design of a Community of Practice for People With Personal and Professional Expertise or Interest in Dementia in Australia
BACKGROUND: Communities of practice offer an opportunity to break down siloes for those with personal and professional experience of dementia. We aimed to design the Dementia Learning and Research Community in Australia, a virtual space to bring people with an interest or experience of dementia together to learn from each other, and provide opportunities for education and networking. METHODS: A three-phase co-design process was conducted, consist…
Communities of Practice and Living Labs
BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition of the importance of including those with lived experience in health and healthcare research. Communities of practice and living labs are two increasingly common approaches being used for the involvement of lived experience experts. OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare the key characteristics of communities of practice and living labs in health and healthcare research that include people with lived experience…
Understanding perspectives of older adults on the role of technology in the wider context of their social relationships
Technological interventions are increasingly popular methods of targeting and preventing loneliness in older adults. Research has identified various factors that influence the willingness and propensity of older adults to integrate technology into their social lives and the ways in which this may enhance their social connectedness. Given prevalence rates and negative outcomes associated with loneliness for this population, further research is war…
Australian public health Covid-19 messaging is missing its mark in some vulnerable communities and people who reject Covid-19 safety advice
Background: There are groups in our community who may be more vulnerable to contracting, transmitting, or experiencing negative health impacts of COVID-19 than the general community. They may also have greater difficulty accessing, accepting, and acting upon COVID-19 public health information. Our aim was to understand if vulnerable communities and those who express "COVID-risk" behavioural intentions seek and respond differently to COVID-19 publ…
English language proficiency and hospital admissions via the emergency department by aged care residents in Australia
Residents of Residential Age Care Facilities (RACFs) have particularly high rates of Emergency Department (ED) visits, with up to 55% being potentially avoidable (e.g. not resulting in a hospital admission). This is concerning as ED visits by RACF residents are associated with negative outcomes including longer hospital stays, iatrogenic illness, complications and mortality. Limited English proficiency (LEP) has significant negative impacts on th…
A Pilot Digital Intervention Targeting Loneliness in Youth Mental Health
Background: Loneliness is an emerging issue for young people, but yet many interventions to address loneliness in this group focus on providing social opportunities. While these sorts of interventions may appear to increase social connections, loneliness is more related to quality rather than quantity of social relationships. Thus, interventions addressing loneliness should focus on maximizing the quality of current relationships. Together with y…
