  • Relationships between Dietary Patterns and Indices of Arterial Stiffness and Central Arterial Wave Reflection in 9–11-Year-Old Children

Open Access•Pouya Saeedi, Jillian J Haszard et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2020

Arterial stiffness is an important marker of vascular damage and a strong predictor of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Given that pathophysiological processes leading to an increased arterial stiffness begin during childhood, the aim of this clustered observational study was to determine the relationship between modifiable factors including dietary patterns and indices of aortic arterial stiffness and wave reflection in 9-11-year-old children. Dat…

Objective: To investigate associations between alcohol consumption patterns and diet quality, nutrient intakes and biochemical profile of women of childbearing age. Design: Nutrient intake data from 24 h diet recalls, alcohol consumption data and diet quality from the Dietary Habits Questionnaire, and biochemical analyses from the cross-sectional 2008/09 Adult Nutrition Survey in New Zealand. Setting: New Zealand households. Participants: New Zea…

Open Access•Anna S Howe, Paula ML Skidmore et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2016

Objective To examine the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and dietary patterns in adolescents. Design Food choice was assessed using the validated New Zealand Adolescent FFQ. Principal components analysis was used to determine dietary patterns. Trained research assistants measured participants’ height and body mass. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed in a subset of participants using the multistage 20 m shuttle run. The level and…

  • Associations between parental feeding practices, problem food behaviours and dietary intake in New Zealand overweight children aged 4–8 years

Open Access•Jillian J Haszard, Paula ML Skidmore et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2015

Objective Parents report that children’s eating behaviours are a major barrier to providing them with a healthy diet. Links between problem eating behaviours and parental feeding practices are not well established and have not previously been examined in overweight children. The aim of the present study was to assess associations between problem food behaviours, dietary intake and parental feeding practices of overweight children aged 4–8 years. …

Objective The study objective was to determine the relative validity and reproducibility of a modified FFQ for ranking the nutrient intakes of New Zealand toddlers aged 12–24 months. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Dunedin, New Zealand. Subjects One hundred and fifty-two participants completed a ninety-five-item FFQ twice, and five days of weighed diet recording (WDR), over one month. • Diet quality is associated with measures of body fat in adolescents from Otago, New Zealand

Open Access•Jyh Eiin Wong, Winsome R Parnell et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2015

Objective To examine the potential associations between diet quality and multiple measures of body composition in a sample of New Zealand adolescents aged 14–18 years. Design Cross-sectional survey of eleven high schools in Otago, New Zealand. Each participant completed an online FFQ and a New Zealand Diet Quality Index for Adolescents (NZDQI-A) score was calculated based on variety and adequacy of intake for five major food groups. Besides heigh…

  • A comprehensive FFQ developed for use in New Zealand adults

Open Access•Cecilia HY Sam, Sheila A Skeaff et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2014

Objective To evaluate the reliability and relative validity of a semi-quantitative FFQ for assessing the habitual intake of multiple nutrients in New Zealand (NZ) adults over the past 12 months. Design A 154-item FFQ was developed. After initial pre-testing, reliability was assessed using intra-class correlations. Relative validity was assessed by comparing nutrient intakes derived from the FFQ v . those from an 8 d diet record (8dWDR) collected …

  • Is the food environment surrounding schools associated with the diet quality of adolescents in Otago, New Zealand

  • Older women's reduced contact with food in the Changes Around Food Experience (Cafe) study

    Open Access•KATHLEEN LANE, Fiona Poland et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 35

Many older women reduce the amount of cooking and food preparation they do in later life. While cooking may be seen as traditionally associated with women's family roles, little is known about the impact of such reduced engagement with food on their lives. This paper presents the findings from a one-year qualitative study (Changes Around Food Experience, CAFE) of the impact of reduced contact with preparing and cooking meals from scratch for 40 w…

  • Development and validation of a food-based diet quality index for New Zealand adolescents

Open Access•Jyh Eiin Wong, Winsome R Parnell et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Higher NZDQI-A scores were associated with more desirable fat and iron intakes. The scores derived from either FQ or 4DFR were comparable and reproducible when repeated within two weeks. The NZDQI-A is relatively valid and reliable in ranking diet quality in adolescents at a group level even in a small sample size. Further studies are required to test the predictive validity of this food-based diet index in larger samples

  • Attitudes to food differ between adolescent dieters and non-dieters from Otago, New Zealand, but overall food intake does not

Open Access•Anna S Howe, Sandra Mandic et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2013

Objective There is increasing pressure for adolescents to be thin and this may not always be acted upon in healthy ways; for example, certain foods or food groups may be restricted or meals skipped. As foods are not eaten in isolation it is useful to examine dietary patterns and associated psychosocial factors to better understand eating behaviour. The aim of the present study was to identify correlates of ‘dieting’ in adolescents from Otago, New…

Design Secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the NZ 2002 Children’s Nutrition Survey. Dietary intake was assessed using computer-assisted multi-pass 24 h dietary recalls in the home. Data were adjusted for survey weightings to be representative of the NZ population. The effect of day category on nutrient intake, and…

Open Access•Jennifer Rockell, Jennifer E Rockell et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2011

Objective To complete a description of the dietary intakes of New Zealand schoolchildren by describing afternoon and evening foods and nutrients. Design Twenty-four hour dietary recall data from the 2002 Children's Nutrition Survey were analysed to describe food and nutrient intakes during the afternoon (14.00 to 16.59 hours) and evening (17.00 to 23.59 hours). Setting New Zealand homes and schools. Subjects Children ( n 2875) aged 5–14 years. Re…

Open Access•PAULA SKIDMORE, Ailsa Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2010

Objective Poor diet in childhood increases risk of obesity but the relationship between access to food and children’s food choice is underexplored. We determined relationships between distance to and density of food outlets on children’s food choice. Design Children ( n 1721) aged 9–10 years who participated in a cross-sectional study from a sample of state and private schools across urban and rural areas. Food consumption was reported using a sh…

  • Physical activity and dietary behaviour in a population-based sample of British 10-year old children

Open Access•Esther Van Sluijs, Esther MF van Sluijs et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Results indicate that almost 70% of children meet national PA guidelines, indicating that a prevention of decline, rather than increasing physical activity levels, might be an appropriate intervention target. Promotion of daily fruit and vegetable intake in this age group is also warranted, possibly focussing on children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds

  • Life course body size and lipid levels at 53 years in a British birth cohort

Methods: 2311 men and women from a British cohort study were included in analyses. Non-fasting total, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were measured at 53 years.
