Online Peer Support for Gambling Harm
Online peer support (mutual aid provided by individuals with lived experience through digital platforms such as forums, messaging groups, or video meetings) has demonstrated benefits across health contexts but remains underexplored in gambling harm recovery. This study explored how online peer support for gambling harm is used and experienced, including perceived benefits, risks, and its role within broader support pathways, from the perspectives…
Mental Health Experiences and Needs of Women With Congenital Heart Disease in Pregnancy and Postpartum
BACKGROUND AND AIM: In the United Kingdom, mental health and maternal health are now key priorities for research among adults with congenital heart disease. “You have to know how to live with it without getting to the addiction part”
Smartphone usage offers undeniable upsides (social connectivity, increased productivity). However, the ever-expanding utilities of smartphones have prompted debate around device over-reliance, which has prompted interest in ‘digital detox’, ‘technology pushback’ and ‘disconnectivity’. We report an in-depth qualitative exploration of perceptions of smartphone over-reliance and experiences of attempting to modify usage (i.e., efforts to disconnect)…
Loot boxes, problem gambling and problem video gaming
Loot boxes (LBs) are video game-related purchases with a chance-based outcome. Due to similarities with gambling, they have come under increasing scrutiny from media, academics and policymakers alike. Initial evidence suggested that LB engagement might be associated with both problem gambling (PG) and problem video gaming (PVG). We therefore conducted a systematic review of the evidence for associations between LB purchasing, PG and PVG. For LB/P…
Investigating the experience of viewing extreme real-world violence online
This study investigates the psychological impact of viewing user-generated content depicting extreme real-world violence. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to systematically analyse these threads. The themes capture the contradictory ways in which people react to …
Reactions to Unsolicited Violent, and Sexual, Explicit Media Content Shared over Social Media
While there has been extensive research into consumption of "traditional" forms of explicit sexual and violent media (within pornography, videogames and movies), the informal exchange and viewing of explicit real-world violent and sexual content via social media is an under-investigated and potentially problematic behaviour. The current study used an online survey ( n = 225: 169f, 55m, 1x, mean age 30.61 (SD 12.03)) to explore self-reported react…
Locus of control and involvement in videogaming
An external locus of control (feeling low personal control over one’s life) has been linked with excessive/addictive behaviours, including problematic videogaming. The current study sought to determine whether this is driven by the opportunity for greater control over one’s environment within a videogame. Participants ( n = 252, 59% males) completed a traditional locus of control scale, alongside a modified version assessing in-game feelings of c…

The emotional labour of health-care assistants in inpatient dementia care
Although there is much written on the emotional labour of nursing, there is little research grounded in the experience of so-called ‘unqualified’ care assistants. This paper is drawn from an ethnographic study conducted with care assistants on three dementia care wards in one mental health trust within the United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS). We describe the emotional labour carried out by care assistants in their attempts to provide per…
