Landscape heterogeneity and response of lake ecosystems to changes in climate and peatland expansion over the past 7500 years at the tundra-forest border of northern Manitoba, Canada
Responses of Arctic lakes to climate change are complex and heterogeneous at regional to local scales, but there are few studies comparing multiple sites within the same landscape. We studied sediment cores recovered from seven lake sites located within the forest-tundra biome of northern Manitoba, Canada. We first used sediment core pollen from the seven sites to reconstruct July temperatures and total annual precipitation for the past 7500 year…
Environmental Change Since the Woodland Period in the Mid-Ohio Valley
Palynological analyses of sediment cores from Patton Bog in southeastern Ohio recorded environmental changes from ca. 1000 B.C. to the present, representing the first pollen core analyzed from this region. Pollen data show an increase in prairie species, implying periodic expansion of grassland environments during the Woodland period coeval with the initial collection and eventual domestication of Eastern Agricultural Complex seeds. It is suggest…
Arid and humid phases in southern Spain during the last 4000 years
A multiproxy study of sediment cores from Zoñar Lake (37°29′00′′N, 4°41′22′′W, 300 m a.s.l.) supported by 11 14 C AMS dates provides the first high-resolution centennial-scale reconstruction of past humidity changes in southern Spain during the last 4000 years. Arid periods occurred prior to 2.9 cal. kyr BP and during 1.3—0.6 cal. kyr BP (`Mediaeval Climate Anomaly'). The most humid period occurred during 2.6—1.6 cal. kyr BP encompassing the late…
Elevational gradients during the Late-Glacial/Holocene vegetational transition in southern Bulgaria
