  • With Mica We Mourn

    Douglas H Macdonald, Bruce L Manzano et al.•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2009•References: 7

  • Micromorphology of Cotiga Mound, West Virginia

    Open Access•David L Cremeens•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Micromorphology samples from Cotiga Mound (ca. 2100 yr B.P.) reveal distinct microstructures associated with mound construction and post‐construction pedogenesis of the mound materials. The interface between layers of basketloads displays sharp, irregular contacts with little to no evidence of pedoturbation, suggesting rapid construction. Evidence of clay and iron translocation, along with well‐preserved charcoal fragments containing identifiable…

  • Holocene colluvial soils and geoarchaeology in the unglaciated Appalachian Plateau

    Open Access•David L Cremeens, Dana MacDonald et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Buried and sometimes stratified prehistoric sites occur in upland landscapes of the Unglaciated Appalachian Plateau province, although archaeologists have traditionally believed that such settings contain only near surface cultural deposits. The age of colluvial slopes and the characteristics of associated soils vary considerably from north to south within the province, and with the size and order of the valley. We have identified numerous prehis…

  • Complex pedostratigraphy of a terrace fragipan at the Memorial Park site, central Pennsylvania

    Open Access•David L Cremeens, J P Hart et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1998•References: 1

A fragipan (Bxb horizon) encountered during the excavation of a multicomponent archaeological site buried on an alluvial terrace in central Pennsylvania was evaluated to determine the degree of development, pedostratigraphy, and age. Based on the horizon thickness, and the degree of development of adjacent horizons, we believe that the fragipan was weakly developed. Two to three buried A horizons (Ab) occurred within the Bxb, thus, the fragipan f…

  • Geomorphic setting and stratigraphy of Cotiga Mound, Mingo County, West Virginia

    Open Access•David L Cremeens, Diane Landers et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997•References: 1

Cotiga Mound, a 2100-year-old Woodland burial mound, was constructed on a mid-Holocene terrace along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River. The terrace is the only stable, level landscape in the area. The intact nature of the terrace soil horizons indicated that little if any of the mound materials were taken from the terrace surface in the immediate vicinity of the mound. The mound was constructed of silty material and contained basket-loading mac…
