Applying Natural Language Processing Adaptive Dialogs to Promote Knowledge Integration During Instruction
We explored the value of adding NLP adaptive dialogs to a web-based, inquiry unit on photosynthesis and cellular respiration designed following the Knowledge Integration (KI) framework. The unit was taught by one science teacher in seventh grade middle school classrooms with 162 students. We measured students’ integrated understanding at three time points across instruction using KI scores. Students received significantly higher KI scores after t…
Chinese High School EFL Teacher Identity Reconstruction via the Use of New Textbooks
Teacher identity reconstruction plays a key role in the successful implementation of educational reforms in the field of second and foreign language teaching. Most of the previous studies have explored this process on the tertiary level and with beginning teachers via the implementation of new teaching approaches, media, and content. However, few studies have examined experienced high school language teachers’ identity reconstruction in education…

Water Quality Evaluation and Pollution Source Apportionment of Surface Water in a Major City in Southeast China Using Multi-Statistical Analyses and Machine Learning Models
The comprehensive evaluation of water quality and identification of potential pollution sources has become a hot research topic. In this study, 14 water quality parameters at 4 water quality monitoring stations on the M River of a city in southeast China were measured monthly for 10 years (2011-2020). Multiple statistical methods, the water quality index (WQI) model, machine learning (ML), and positive matrix factorisation (PMF) models were used …
Exploring Primary-School EFL Teacher Expertise in Scaffolding
While much attention has been focused—in the field of teacher expertise—on expert teachers’ cognitive and behavioral characteristics, little attention has been devoted to how expert teachers reciprocally interact with the learning process. To bridge this gap in knowledge, this study seeks to explore primary-school EFL (English as a Foreign Language)—teacher expertise in the area of scaffolding. A comparison has been made among 2 expert EFL teache…
Construction of the Infection Curve of Local Cases of Covid-19 in Hong Kong using Back-Projection
This study aimed to estimate the infection curve of local cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Hong Kong and identify major events and preventive measures associated with the trajectory of the infection curve in the first two waves. The daily number of onset local cases was used to estimate the daily number of infections based on back-projection. The estimated infection curve was examined to identify the preventive measures or major eve…
