Empty Lands and the Making of the Individual Property Regime in Western Anatolia: Actors, Debates and Policies (from the 18th to the early 20th century)
This study attempts to read the making of the Ottoman individual property regime during the nineteenth century in Western Anatolia, specifically in the Meander Valley, through the lens of empty lands. It suggests that the historical trajectories of empty lands can be read in terms of an interplay between the intra-elite and inter-elite struggles in the Meander region. Reading the struggles over empty lands in this way highlights the fact that the…

The Changing Nature of the Domestic Service Sector in 19th-Century Istanbul: Female Slaves and Wage-Earning Girls
Istanbul, a power nexus in the Ottoman world, witnessed a proliferation of female child labor in domestic service over the course of the 19th century. This study shows that slave ownership and the recruitment of girl domestics were highly class-sensitive phenomena. This means that 19th-century Istanbul groups of middling economic means, who could not easily access the slave market, could recruit girl domestics with lower wages. The study claims t…

Peasantry in a Well-protected Domain: Wallachian Peasantry and Muslim Çiftlik / Kışlaks under the Ottoman Rule
Focusing on the relationship between the Porte, Wallachian peasants and the Danubian military notables, this study explores the nature of large-estate formation in Wallachia during the eighteenth century, and the aggressive policies pursued by the Ottoman imperial centre in the Danube region to halt the spread of animal farms (kışlaks) and large estates (çiftliks). In Balkan scholarship, there is a widely shared assumption that the Porte acted as…
In Between Market and Charity: Child Domestic Work and Changing Labor Relations in Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Istanbul
This article focuses on children taken by Istanbulite families for upbringing and employment in the Ottoman capital during the 1800–1900 period. It suggests that domestic child labor which was shaped by the concept of ‘charity’ and economic interests during the first half of the nineteenth century progressively turned into wage labor during the second half of the century. The study claims that the nineteenth century witnessed a transformation of …
Land ownership, tax farming and the social structure of local credit markets in the Ottoman Balkans, 1685–1855
This article studies how the emergence of new political elites and changes in land tenure relationships shaped the socio-economic profile of local credit markets in the Ottoman Balkans between the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries. By using probate inventories and court records for the cities of Salonika (including Karaferye), Vidin and Ruse, I compare how the expansion of tax-farming institutions and the concentration of land owner…
