  • Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Non-Fatal Self-Inflicted Firearm Injuries Among Adults in the United States, 2000–2021

Open Access•Gia Barboza-Salerno, Malcolm McCarthy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2026

Nonfatal self-inflicted firearm injuries represent an important and understudied public health concern in the United States. We analyzed nationally representative data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System–Firearm Injury Surveillance Study (NEISS-FISS), 2000–2021, to characterize nonfatal self-inflicted firearm injuries among U.S. adults aged 18–64 years. Emergency department (ED) narratives were combined using text mining and a…

  • The land cover paradox: Characteristics of blue- and green spaces within and beyond high-risk suicide clusters

    Open Access•Gia Barboza-Salerno, Amy C Watson-Grace et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2025

The findings reveal that the mental health impacts of environmental features are context-dependent and spatially patterned. While access to green and blue space may offer protective effects, these benefits are not uniformly experienced across urban neighborhoods. Suicide prevention efforts should consider not only individual and socioeconomic risk factors, but also spatial disparities in environmental quality and neighborhood-level disadvantage

  • Does network homophily persist in multicultural volunteering programs? Results from an Exponential Random Graph Model

    Open Access•Qiuchang Cao, Holly Dabelko‐schoeny et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2024•References: 19

Few studies examined the social network structures within multicultural volunteer programs for low-income diverse older adults, making it unclear how diverse older adults establish social connections beyond their co-ethnic community. This study aims to identify the social network structures within a Senior Companion Program (SCP), a multicultural low-income volunteer program in a Midwestern Metropolitan area in the United States. Data were collec…

  • Difference in Response to Feedback and Gender in Three Therapeutic Community Units

Open Access•Keith Warren, Nathan J Doogan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Therapeutic communities (TCs) for substance abuse incorporate a system of peer feedback through written affirmations and corrections. Previous research has found that TC residents show a response to affirmations that is detectable for roughly 8 weeks, with response to corrections being of shorter duration and weaker overall. It is not clear whether and to what extent response to feedback in TCs varies between men and women. Previous research in o…

  • An Agent-Based Model of Lifetime Attendance and Self-Help Program Growth

Danielle Hiance, Nathan Doogan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice…•2012

Research on Alcoholics Anonymous and other self-help programs has shown mixed results regarding lifetime participation at the individual level. No one has systematically studied whether lifetime membership contributes to the success of the program as a whole. This project analyzes the relationship of lifetime membership and program growth using a series of agent-based models. Results demonstrate that programs encouraging lifetime attendance produ…

  • The Luck of Third Street: Archaeology of Chinatown, San Bernardino, California

  • Fast and the Arms Race: The Interaction of Group Aggression and the Families and Schools Together Program in the Aggressive and Delinquent Behaviors of Inner-City Elementary School Students

Open Access•Keith Warren, D Paul Moberg et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Primary Prevention•2006

  • House and Housemate: An Exploratory Study of Residential Setting, Interpersonal Interactions and Aggression in Two Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

Keith Warren, Sean Newsome et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2004•References: 14

Studies have consistently found higher levels of aggressive and auto-aggressive behavior among intellectually disabled (ID) residents of institutions and group homes than among ID residents in the community. However, the reasons for this discrepancy remain unclear. This exploratory study suggests that group living situations may increase the volatility of aggressive and auto-aggressive behaviors by leading to unstable nonlinear dynamics and provi…

  • Multiscale Nonlinearity in a Time Series of Weekly Alcohol Intake

    Keith Warren•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2002

Several authors have discussed the possibility that nonlinear dynamics might clarify substance abuse and chemical dependence. Nonlinear dynamical structure implies the possibility of oscillatory dynamics and high sensitivity to external perturbation. In this single-subject case study we analyzed the alcohol intake of a substance-abusing participant over a period of about five years using nonlinear time series analysis. The intake is measured in o…

  • Offense Cycles, Thresholds and Bifurcations: Applying Dynamical Systems Theory to the Behaviors of Adolescent Sex Offenders

Keith Warren, Karen S Knox et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2000•References: 22

In recent years there has been much discussion of the possible application of dynamical systems theory, sometimes called nonlinear dynamics, to social science. One plausible application would be to the antisocial behaviors of sex offenders, since common clinical offense cycle models appear to imply nonlinearity. In this article, we fit linear and nonlinear models to three time series of antisocial behaviors of three adolescent sex offenders. Nonl…
