Building Community Virtually on the Fly
The Recreation Management and Leadership (RML) program at Western Washington University utilizes a cohort-based model in which sequenced courses and overnight retreats work in tandem to cultivate an inclusive learning community. COVID-19 necessitated not only that we quickly move all of our courses online, but it challenged us to transition our nature-based retreats to a virtual environment as we attempted to build community and foster connection…
An Exploratory Study of a Wilderness Adventure Program for Young Offenders
Wilderness adventure programs have been utilized as an intervention in youth corrections in the United States since the arrival of Outward Bound in the early 1960s. This exploratory study evaluates the effects of a 21-day wilderness adventure program for young offenders called Wilderness Endeavors. The results of the study showed that self-efficacy and hope scores changed significantly and that young offenders who had reported higher levels of ho…
Predictors of Interpersonal Growth in Volunteer Tourism: A Latent Curve Approach
Volunteer travel has become a substantial market segment in the tourism industry. Case studies have documented the effects of volunteer travel on participants and host communities. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the impact of volunteer travel experiences on the openness, civic attitudes, and wisdom of college participants and to elucidate predictors of positive growth in these intended outcomes. A multivariate latent grow…
Leisure Time Physical Activity of Park Visitors: Retesting Constraint Models in Adoption and Maintenance Stages
This study extends the leisure constraints research. Specifically, the constraints-effects-mitigation model is examined in the context of park visitors' leisure time physical activity (LTPA). Model structure differences are tested between respondents in two stages of regular physical activity. Findings support the model where negotiation partially mediates the constraint-participation and motivation-participation relationships. Differences in the…
The Glimpse and Fan Service: New Media, New Aesthetics
New media forms often open up new understandings of aesthetics. Japanese comics (Manga), and animations (Anime) arose in a time of limited social constraint. This allowed them to explore unmentioned topics and develop new aesthetics that involve Fan Service and the Glimpse. Fanservice is the random and gratuitous display of a series of anticipated gestures common in Manga and Anime. These gestures include such things as panty shots, leg spreads a…
