  • Consensus Statement on Practical Guidance for Optimizing Antihypertensive Therapy in Older Adults Needing Nursing Care by the Japan Geriatrics Society and the Japanese Society of Hypertension

Open Access•Yoshio Iwashima, Yuichi Akasaki et al.•ARTICLE•Geriatrics and gerontology…•2026

This Consensus Statement outlines management for nursing care-dependent older adults (Categories 3–4). Key principles include prioritizing QOL over strict BP targets, avoiding reduction of SBP 200/120 mmHg. However, discontinuing the antihypertensives did not improve cognitive function or physical performance, and tended to increase the risk of cardiovascular events [13]. A 2020 Cochrane Review found no significant differences in all-cause mortal…

  • Does the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence ( JST ‐ IC ) Predict Mortality? Findings From the Sonic Study

Open Access•Yukie Masui, Yuko Yoshida et al.•ARTICLE•Geriatrics and gerontology…•2026

A higher Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) score-an index of higher-level functional ability among older Japanese adults-was associated with a lower long-term risk of all-cause mortality, with significant associations observed across all age groups and among those in their 80s, but not among those in their 70s.

  • Incidental Lifestyle Physical Activity and Its Relationships With Overall Frailty and Frailty Domains in Community‐Dwelling Older Japanese

Open Access•Yaya Li, Michiko Kido et al.•ARTICLE•Geriatrics and gerontology…•2026

  • Longitudinal Association Between the Carotid Intima‐Media Thickness and Sarcopenia in an Older Japanese Population

Open Access•Ken Terashima, Hiroshi Akasaka et al.•ARTICLE•Geriatrics and gerontology…•2026

  • Everyday Social Interactions and Affect in Very Old Adults

Open Access•Takeshi Nakagawa, Saori Yasumoto et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2026

The beneficial role of social relationships in the well‐being of older adults has been well documented. However, little is known about how social interactions contribute to well‐being in very old adults aged 80 years and above. This study examined between‐ and within‐person associations between social interactions and affect in very old adults' daily lives. Fifty‐seven community dwellers (age 82 to 86 years) responded to a daily diary questionnai…

  • The Function of Leisure Activity Measure (FLAM)

Can Wang, Takeshi Nakagawa et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2025•References: 34

  • Early- to late-life environmental factors and late-life global cognition in septuagenarian and octogenarians

Open Access•Yoshiko Ishioka, Yoshiko Lily Ishioka et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

This study aimed to evaluate cognitively stimulating environments throughout life and to examine direct and indirect associations between these environments and late-life cognition. Early-life education, three domains of work complexity (data, people, and things) based on the longest-held occupation, and engagement in late-life leisure activities (LAs) were assessed. A structural equation model was developed using cross-sectional data of 1721 Jap…

  • Factors Related to Preventive Behaviors against a Decline in Physical Fitness among Community-Dwelling Older Adults during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Yumi Kimura, Hiroshi Akasaka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Older adults face the concern of developing frailty and sarcopenia due to an inactive lifestyle during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to reveal the preventive behaviors taken by older adults who perceived a decline in physical fitness during COVID-19 and analyze the background factors which promoted such behaviors using a qualitative study design in 2020. The participants were recruited through the cohort study…

  • Construct Validity of a New Health Assessment Questionnaire for the National Screening Program of Older Adults in Japan

Open Access•Tatsuro Ishizaki, Yukie Masui et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The Japanese government has implemented a new screening program to promote measures to avoid worsening lifestyle-related diseases and frailty among the older population. In this effort, the government formulated a new health assessment questionnaire for the screening program of old-old adults aged ≥75 years. The questionnaire comprises 15 items, of which 12 address frailty, two address general health status, and one addresses smoking habits. This…

  • Oral Functions Are Associated with Muscle Strength and Physical Performance in Old-Old Japanese

Open Access•Yuki Murotani, Kodai Hatta et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Grip strength and walking speed are considered to be important indicators of physical frailty. However, no study has contemporaneously examined any association of multiple oral functions with grip strength and walking speed. The purpose of this study was to examine which oral functions are associated with muscle strength (grip strength), physical performance (walking speed) or both. The study participants were 511 community-dwelling people (254 m…
