Does the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence ( JST ‐ IC ) Predict Mortality? Findings From the Sonic Study
A higher Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) score-an index of higher-level functional ability among older Japanese adults-was associated with a lower long-term risk of all-cause mortality, with significant associations observed across all age groups and among those in their 80s, but not among those in their 70s.
Longitudinal Association Between the Carotid Intima‐Media Thickness and Sarcopenia in an Older Japanese Population
The Effects of Age and Cultural Differences on the Relationship Between Aging Anxiety and Ageism
This study aims to test the hypothesis that the association between aging anxiety and ageism will be enhanced by age differently in the United States and in Japan. Data were obtained from online surveys in the United States ( M age = 40.44, SD = 14.98; 39.7% women; n = 886) and in Japan ( M age = 50.32, SD = 16.38; 52.7% women; n = 556). Our findings illuminate that the levels of aging anxiety in the Japanese participants were positively associat…
Everyday Social Interactions and Affect in Very Old Adults
The beneficial role of social relationships in the well‐being of older adults has been well documented. However, little is known about how social interactions contribute to well‐being in very old adults aged 80 years and above. This study examined between‐ and within‐person associations between social interactions and affect in very old adults' daily lives. Fifty‐seven community dwellers (age 82 to 86 years) responded to a daily diary questionnai…
The Function of Leisure Activity Measure (FLAM)
Early- to late-life environmental factors and late-life global cognition in septuagenarian and octogenarians
This study aimed to evaluate cognitively stimulating environments throughout life and to examine direct and indirect associations between these environments and late-life cognition. Early-life education, three domains of work complexity (data, people, and things) based on the longest-held occupation, and engagement in late-life leisure activities (LAs) were assessed. A structural equation model was developed using cross-sectional data of 1721 Jap…
Factors Related to Preventive Behaviors against a Decline in Physical Fitness among Community-Dwelling Older Adults during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Older adults face the concern of developing frailty and sarcopenia due to an inactive lifestyle during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to reveal the preventive behaviors taken by older adults who perceived a decline in physical fitness during COVID-19 and analyze the background factors which promoted such behaviors using a qualitative study design in 2020. The participants were recruited through the cohort study…
Relationship between Personality and Mortality among Japanese Older Adults
Personality is one of the fundamental factors in determining longevity. We used a 14-year mortality surveillance to investigate the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and all-cause mortality among older adults dwelling in a Japanese community. Individuals over 65 years old (484 males and 743 females) were recruited for the study. We used the NEO Five-Factor Inventory to assess the Big Five personality traits: neuroticism, extrav…
Construct Validity of a New Health Assessment Questionnaire for the National Screening Program of Older Adults in Japan
The Japanese government has implemented a new screening program to promote measures to avoid worsening lifestyle-related diseases and frailty among the older population. In this effort, the government formulated a new health assessment questionnaire for the screening program of old-old adults aged ≥75 years. The questionnaire comprises 15 items, of which 12 address frailty, two address general health status, and one addresses smoking habits. This…
A Cultural Comparison of Personality Profiles of U.S. and Japanese Centenarians
The purpose of this study was a cross-cultural examination of centenarians’ personality through a person-centered approach to examine if there is a “resilient” personality profile consistent across cultures. Proxy reports information was obtained from family and close friends of 239 U.S. centenarians from the Georgia Centenarians Study and 272 Japanese centenarians from the Tokyo Centenarian Study. Latent profile analyses were conducted to identi…
CBSI as a Social Innovation to Promote the Health of Older People in Japan
In this paper, we introduce a concept called community-based social innovation (CBSI). CBSI programs have been introduced to improve the physical and psychological well-being of older people. CBSI programs encourage older people to (1) take care of themselves and their peers, (2) sustain their well-being, and (3) create a cohesive and inclusive community. Although the emergence of CBSI programs is a global phenomenon, the variations, effectivenes…
Oral Functions Are Associated with Muscle Strength and Physical Performance in Old-Old Japanese
Grip strength and walking speed are considered to be important indicators of physical frailty. However, no study has contemporaneously examined any association of multiple oral functions with grip strength and walking speed. The purpose of this study was to examine which oral functions are associated with muscle strength (grip strength), physical performance (walking speed) or both. The study participants were 511 community-dwelling people (254 m…

Age, Emotion Regulation, and Affect in Adulthood
Evidence indicates that older adults experience high levels of emotional well‐being. However, little is known empirically about the underlying mechanism of this state. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether emotion regulation mediates the link between age and affect in adulthood. The sample consisted of 516 J apanese participants aged 30 (±1), 50 (±1), and 70 (±1) years, who were registered with an I nternet survey company. C…
Examination of Important Life Experiences of the Oldest-Old
Reliability and validity of the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) in young and old people
The higher performance of older people in prospective memory (PM) tasks in a naturalistic setting rather than in a laboratory setting is well known in cognitive aging research and is called the “age prospective memory paradox”. The mechanism of the paradox is poorly understood. To clarify this complex phenomenon, testing of the contribution of candidate variables that may influence PM performance in older adults is needed. To identify possible va…
The role of the prefrontal cortex in the go/no‐go task in humans
To study the localization of response inhibition in the human brain, especially the role of the prefrontal cortex and laterality of its activation, we used positron emission tomography (PET) to measure regional cerebral blood flow in 11 right‐handed participants while they performed a go/no‐go and a simple control reaction‐time task. In the control task, the participants responded to a target stimulus following a cue stimulus. In the go/no‐go tas…
