Paul Stolk, Paul J Stolk et al.•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•2017•References: 4

Leisure and tourism industries in regional areas are dominated by both small- and medium-sized businesses, collectively referred to as small-to-medium tourism enterprises. This paper presents a case study that describes a research initiative that was developed to engage with the wine tourism and related leisure industries of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia, where small-to-medium tourism enterprises have proliferated. The case stud…

Inclusion boundaries and episodic distinction are the two themes that emerged from the data. The findings reveal that both camps sought to establish a sense of community thro…

  • Values congruity in tourism and protected areas policy

Po-Yu Wang, Kevin Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Leisure Research•2012•References: 1

Tourism is significantly linked to a range of economic fluctuations. This is particularly evident in the recent global financial crisis that has seen a decline in tourist visitation numbers. This situation has seen governments, regional tourism associations and tourism business operators globally, seeking ways to minimize the impact of this decline. While the global financial crisis has had a significant impact upon tourism in general, one area w…

  • Reflections on the Ambiguous Intersections between Volunteering and Tourism

    Kevin Lyons, Kevin D Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2012•Cited by: 8•References: 11

In this paper we critique the intersections between volunteering and tourism and consider how these have been treated in scholarly research. We highlight how current narrow definitions of volunteer tourism may be obscuring activities which could further expand our understanding of the intersections of volunteering and tourism. We reflect on three examples from our own research to explore atypical volunteer tourism activities that push at the curr…

  • Enhancing the Employability of Leisure Studies Graduates through Work Integrated Learning

Kevin Lyons, Kevin D Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Leisure Research•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Graduate employment rates are often used in Australian universities as a key performance indicator in relation to teaching and learning outcomes. While leisure studies and related curricula have always concerned themselves with preparing students for careers within the broadly-based leisure industries, given the climate of funding of higher education, such programs may be vulnerable unless they can demonstrate their professional relevance. This p…

  • Ambiguities in Volunteer Tourism

    Kevin Lyons, Kevin D Lyons•ARTICLE•Tourism Recreation Research•2003•Cited by: 13•References: 15

This study critically challenges the implied unproblematic categorizations of tourism by exploring cultural exchange as an ambiguous form of volunteer tourism. Specifically, this article presents findings from a case study of a group of Australian participating in a J-1 visitor exchange programme in the United States. The findings of this study suggest that cultural exchange as a form of volunteer tourism creates a number of potentially ambiguous…
