Socio-demographic differences in nature-based recreation
Few studies of nature-based recreation activities have compared activity patterns across different cultures. We conducted a cross-sectional study to explore socio-demographic differences in different forms of outdoor recreation (i.e. any nature-based activities, forest-based activities, gardening, nature-based adventure activities) among American (n = 606), Spanish (n = 438), and Brazilian (n = 448) adults (≥ 18 years old). We found that socio-de…
The potential of gardening and other plant‐related interventions to reduce symptoms of depression
Previous systematic reviews have examined the effect of horticultural interventions (e.g., taking care of plants, planting, gardening) on individuals' depressive symptoms through analyses focused exclusively on randomized controlled trials, but that approach overlooks a majority of the potentially informative published research. To complement previous work, we searched the databases MEDLINE, PsycArticles, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrial…
Understanding the role of pluralistic ignorance in biodiversity conservation
Collective misperceptions of social norms—pluralistic ignorance—are widespread. • There are few applications of pluralistic ignorance research to biodiversity topics. • Pluralistic ignorance may hinder individual and system changes for biodiversity conservation. • This Perspective offers a framework to develop impactful pluralistic ignorance research in the biodiversity domain. • We suggest investigating pluralistic ignorance, its consequences an…
The Effect of Nature-Based Adventure Interventions on Depression
We conducted a systematic review to synthesize evidence of the effect of nature-based adventure (NBA) interventions on depressive symptoms. Our search was conducted in April 2021 and utilized the following databases: MEDLINE (PubMed), PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Clinicaltrials.gov. Forty-two studies ( n = 2,689 participants) with different designs, published between 1979 and 2021, were included. Collectively, results sugges…
Leisure-Time Physical Activity and its Relationship with Gender and Walking Time to The Park or Gym
In this cross-sectional study, we describe the leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) of 374 adults who answered an online questionnaire. We also explored the relationship between LTPA, gender, and walking time to the nearest park or gym from the participant’s residence. As expected from a recruitment process prone to include physically active individuals, the prevalence of LTPA during the last week was 80.2% (CI95%: 75.8 - 84.1). Our median parti…
Gender Differences in Connection to Nature, Outdoor Preferences, and Nature-Based Recreation Among College Students in Brazil and the United States
Nature-based recreation (NBR) can enhance human health and promote conservation. As a result, there is a growing interest in the drivers of NBR. In two separate surveys of college students in Brazil (N = 224) and the United States (N = 207), we found that young adults with stronger connection to nature (CN) have a greater preference for outdoor environments to recreate and that these preferences are associated with more frequent participation in …
The 7-items version of the connectedness to nature scale
The utility and limitations of the New Ecological Paradigm scale for children
The New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale adapted for use with children (NEP-C) is one of the most frequently used measures of children’s environmental beliefs. Though widely utilized, the limitations of the NEP-C instrument are often overlooked. Based on a systematic synthesis of existing literature examining the NEP-C, we argue that the scale assesses specific types of beliefs within the larger NEP, that some children have difficulty comprehendin…

Experiences in Nature and Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors
There is empirical evidence suggesting a positive link between direct experiences in nature and people's environmental attitudes (EA) and behaviors (EB). This has led researchers to encourage more frequent contact with nature, especially during childhood, as a way of increasing pro-environmentalism (i.e., pro-EA and pro-EB). However, the association between experiences in nature and EA/EB is complex, and specific guidelines for people's everyday …
Enhancing Nature Conservation and Health
Nature-based recreation associated with connectedness to nature and leisure satisfaction among students in Brazil
There is growing evidence that nature-based recreation (NBR) during childhood promotes connectedness to nature, which in turn fuels NBR during adulthood. In addition to providing a number of health benefits, NBR participation may enhance leisure satisfaction, an important predictor of happiness and life satisfaction. In this exploratory study, we tested these hypothesised links using a path model with a cross-sectional sample of 224 Brazilian col…
Nature Experiences and Adults’ Self-Reported Pro-environmental Behaviors
This cross-sectional study aims to improve our understanding of the psychological pathways behind the commonly reported link between experiences in nature and pro-environmentalism. Particularly, we explore whether nature experiences lead to self-reported pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) and whether this relation is mediated by connectedness to nature. Additionally, we examine the possible lasting effect of childhood experiences with nature on a…
