  • Well-Being of Marital Groups in Later Life: Are Divorced Elders Disadvantaged

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2008•Cited by: 1

Data from a community assessment of health survey were used to examine economic and health indicators of elderly marital groups (N = 208) residing in North Carolina. The author found divorced elders (1) owned few assets, (2) were likely to be diagnosed with two of the major risk factors for contracting diabetes, (3) had a “fair” to “poor” self-assessed health, and (4) were likely to have sought financial support from family and/or friends to help…

  • Does the Application of Child Support Guidelines at the Time of Court Action Affect Fathers' Subsequent Compliance with Their Child Support Obligations

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2006

Fathers are likely to pay their child support on time when presumptive child support guidelines are used flexibly in response to their specific concerns. Data from 297 court cases assigned to a child support enforcement services agency in New Hampshire were used to determine whether or not the manner in which these guidelines were applied (rigid or flexible) at the time of court action had an effect on fathers' subsequent compliance with their co…

Open Access•Vincent T Snipes, Walter Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2006

In the United States, the digital divide exists, which is a gap between people with access to technology and those who do not have access. The African American community is far behind Whites in terms of computer and Internet usage. Many advocates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are concerned about the existence of a digital divide between predominantly White colleges and HBCUs. This study reports technology scores for the …

  • Urban and Rural Differences in the Provision of Health Insurance Coverage for Children of Divorce

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2003

Using data from divorce case records in New Hampshire this study examined urban and rural differences in the provision of health insurance coverage for children of divorce. In the overall sample of cases (N= 474) results from a chi-square test found rural children (N= 123) to be nearly twice as likely to be uninsured than urban children (N= 351). Results from the logistic regression in the urban county found fathers' and mothers' incomes to incre…

  • Factors Influencing the Application of Child Support Guidelines: Are There Urban and Rural Differences

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2003•References: 14

Using 507 divorce records, this study determines whether or not factors, such as parents' socioeconomics, child custody decisions, and characteristics of the legal system, affect the manner in which child support guidelines are applied in an urban and rural courthouse in New Hampshire. Stepwise logistic regressions found individual factors within the two broad categories of socioeconomics and child custody decisions to differ in these two courtho…

  • Determinants of Patterns in Deviations from Child Support Guidelines

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2000

Data were obtained from 507 divorce records in Superior Courts in New Hampshire to identify factors that dictate patterns in deviations from presumptive child support guidelines. Of parents' socioeconomics and child custody decisions, logistic regressions found only the latter to have an effect on patterns in deviations from the guidelines. The log odds of a downward departure decreased in situations where fathers were awarded physical custody. T…

  • An Evaluation of the New Hampshire Child Support Guidelines: Using Social Science Research to Shape Child Support Policy

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1998

An initiative was introduced in the 1996 New Hampshire Legislature that would grant a reduction in child support payments based on the number of overnight stays with children. This paper presents a case study discussing the process in which data on the court's usage of child support guidelines were obtained from divorce records and attorneys in two New Hampshire counties and used by a legislative committee to assess the merits of incorporating th…

  • Attorneys' Political Ideological Belief Systems and Attitudes Toward the Ohio Child Support Guidelines: An Alternative Assessment of Guidelines

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1994

The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) whether or not a relationship exists between attorneys' political ideological belief systems and attitudes toward the 1987 Ohio Child Support Guidelines, and (2) whether or not attitudes toward guidelines and child support award decisions are consistent. A bivariate analysis (Pearson r's) found liberals to hold favorable attitudes toward the guidelines while conservatives hold unfavorable attitu…

  • The Effects of Background Characteristics of Attorneys and Judges on Decision Making in Domestic Relations Court: An Analysis of Child Support Awards

    Walter L Ellis•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1992

The purposes of this research were: (1) to determine whether background characteristics of attorneys and judges affect the awarding of child support orders and (2) to determine whether institution of 1987 Ohio child support guidelines provides predictable and fair child support awards. It was concluded that the two sets of background characteristics had separate effects on the awarding of child support oders. Attorney's background characteristics…
