Indigenous Data Sovereignty and the Governance of Artificial Intelligence
This article argues that artificial intelligence (AI) will not benefit Indigenous peoples equitably unless grounded in Indigenous data sovereignty and Indigenous governance of AI systems. In Australia and comparable nation-states, data ecosystems have long served as instruments of colonial control, determining what knowledges are valued, how people are categorized, and who benefits. Collective Capability Within Indigenist Evaluation
Evaluation is essential for assessing whether policy and program outcomes align with their intended goals. A key critique of Western evaluation approaches is their failure to incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. Developing an Indigenist evaluation concept can enhance evaluation quality by recognising Indigenous perspectives. This study draws on Indigenous Lifeworlds as a theoretical basis to explore the idea of ‘collective cap…
Implementing Indigenous Data Sovereignty in Australia
This article presents the development of a five‐phase Indigenous Data Governance (IDGov) Framework in Australia, focusing on partnerships between the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) sector and non‐Indigenous health entities. While the Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) movement has gained significant momentum over the past decade in Australia and other Anglo‐colonised nation‐states and beyond, the practical implementa…

Indigenous Data Sovereignty, in its proclamation of the right of Indigenous peoples to govern the collection, ownership, and application of data, recognises data as a cultural and economic asset. The impact of data is magnified by the emergence of Big Data and the associated impetus to open publicly held data (Open Data). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities, heavily overrepresented in social disadvantage–relate…
‘Telling our story… Creating our own history’
Our findings support the assertion that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people want to be involved in research when it is done 'the right way'. Footprints in Time has successfully recruited and retained the current-largest cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia through the use of participatory research methodologies, suggesting effective study implementation and processes. Participants indicated ongoing commit…
