  • How did the Covid ‐19 pandemic affect men's and women's returns to unionization

    Open Access•Eunice S Han•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2024

Using data from the Current Population Survey for the period 2015 to 2021, I study union‐nonunion differences in employment, wages and other terms and conditions before and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. Analyses are run separately for men and women. I find that, compared to non‐union workers, union workers were better able to retain employment, less likely to do telework, and more likely to receive pay for the hours they did not work during the pa…

  • The Effect of Changes in Legal Institutions Weakening Teachers’ Unions on Districts’ Spending on Teacher Compensation

    Eunice S Han, Emma García•ARTICLE•American Journal of Education•2024•References: 30

Purpose: The unanticipated changes in state legislation in Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, and Wisconsin in 2011–12 significantly restricted or entirely prohibited the collective bargaining rights of teachers. Considering these institutional changes as a natural experiment, we examine the causal impact of weakening teacher unionization on districts’ spending on teacher compensation. Research Methods/Approach: We merge two nationally represen…

  • The Effect of Teachers’ Unions on Teacher Stress

    Open Access•Eunice S Han, Emma García•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2023•References: 49

This study examines the effect of teachers’ unions on the stress that teachers experience in their schools. Relying on a nationally representative district-teacher matched dataset in pre-pandemic periods, we employ principal factor analysis to assess to teacher stress and use both contractual status and union membership to measure union strength. Based on multilevel linear model, we find that teachers’ unions are negatively associated with teache…

  • What Teachers’ Unions Do for Teachers When Collective Bargaining is Prohibited

    Open Access•Eunice S Han, Jeffrey H Keefe et al.•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 45

Our research examines the relationship between teachers’ unions, teacher compensation, employment conditions, and turnover in Southern US states that prohibit the collective bargaining of public school teachers. We assess union strength by meet-and-confer status and the teacher union density of districts and estimate union impact using propensity score matching. We find that teachers’ unions are positively associated with teacher compensation and…

  • Determinants of teacher attrition

Open Access•Emma García, Eunice S Han et al.•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2022

This study examines various factors influencing teacher attrition. Relying on nationally representative, district-teacher matched data, we attempt to identify key determinants of teacher attrition by employing multilevel mixed-effects linear models, which control for commonalities among teachers within the same school district. We find that a stronger teacher voice, a more supportive work environment, fewer school problems, and greater teacher mo…

  • Teachers’ Unions

    Open Access•Eunice S Han, Jeffrey H Keefe et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Policy•2022

This research investigates whether teachers’ unions influence student academic achievement in Southern states that prohibit collective bargaining. Our data are from the School and Staffing Survey and the Stanford Education Data Archive. We measure the strength of teachers’ unions by union membership rate and meet-and-confer status of a district and employ a multilevel mixed-effects model to control for unobservable common characteristics of distr…

  • Teachers’ Base Salary and Districts’ Academic Performance

    Open Access•Emma García, Eunice S Han•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2022

This paper examines the relationship between teacher pay and students’ academic achievement, using nationally representative, district-level linked data between districts’ performance on standardized tests and average teacher base salary. By employing state fixed effects and multilevel mixed effects models, we find that both mathematics and English test scores are significantly higher in districts that offer higher base salaries to teachers, comp…

  • The Gendered Effects of Teachers’ Unions on Teacher Attrition

    Eunice S Han•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2022•References: 4

This study examines how teachers' unions differently affect teacher attrition by gender, relying on nationally representative, district–teacher matched data from the United States. To identify union effects, the article employs a multilevel linear model and exploits natural experiments. Results find that teachers' unions reduce teacher attrition and that the union effects greatly differ by teacher gender and teaching subject. The study also finds…

  • Teachers’ Unionization, Socioeconomic Status, and Student Performance in the United States

    Eunice S Han, Thomas N Maloney•ARTICLE•American Journal of Education•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Purpose: This article examines the relationship between teacher unionization and the academic performance of students in districts of varying socioeconomic status (SES). We aim to answer the following research questions: Do union effects vary with the SES of districts? Are these effects more (or less) pronounced in high-SES, mid-SES, or low-SES districts? Research Methods/Approach: We merge two nationally representative data sets from the United …

  • Teacher Wage Penalty and Decrease in Teacher Quality

    Open Access•Eunice S Han•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 29

This paper examines the relation between teacher pay and teacher quality through the career dynamics of teachers and non-teachers. I find that public school teachers earn considerably less than their comparable college graduates in the non-teaching sector. By tracking wage differentials before and after career changes, I find evidence of positive selection, in which high-paid teachers are more likely to move to non-teaching occupations, and of ne…

  • Teacher Unionization and Student Academic Performance

    Open Access•Eunice S Han, Thomas N Maloney•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 21

This paper investigates the relationship between teachers unions and students’ academic performance. We examine nationally representative data and use a more comprehensive measure of teacher unionization by identifying both districts with collective bargaining contracts and districts with meet-and-confer agreements. We find that teachers unions raise student test scores via both channels. This positive relationship is stronger for black students …

  • The Myth of Unions’ Overprotection of Bad Teachers

    Open Access•Eunice S Han•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2020

This article examines the relationship between teachers’ unions and teacher turnover in U.S. public schools. The trade‐off between teacher pay and employment predicts that unions raise the dismissal rate of underperforming teachers but reduce the attrition of high‐quality teachers, as the higher wages unions negotiate provide districts strong incentives to scrutinize teacher performance during a probationary period while encouraging high‐quality …

  • The Effects of Teachers’ Unions on the Gender Pay Gap among U.S. Public School Teachers

    Open Access•Eunice S Han•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2020

This study examines the effect of teachers’ unions on the gender pay gap among teachers under various legal environments, using nationally representative district–teacher matched data. To identify union effects, I employ propensity score matching, considering both contractual status and teacher union density in each district as a treatment. I find that teachers’ unions significantly reduce the gender pay gap, and the union effects vary by legal e…
