Perspectives and views on flight shame in pandemic times
This study utilizes national survey data from Norway to explore public views on flight shame, measured between 2020 and 2022. Answers to open-ended and closed-ended questions are integrated to explore various perspectives on flight shame, including its function as a persuasive call to action and its normative underpinning. Most display ambiguous, vague, or neutral attitudes towards the concept, with favourable attitudes being more common when it …
(Don’t) be ashamed during take-off and landing
This article examines the rhetorical use, function, and public value of appeals to shame and guilt in the climate change debate. It does so through rhetorical criticism of opinion articles discussing flight shame published in Norwegian newspapers 2019–2020. The opinion articles partake in a rhetorical exchange in which the legitimacy of air travel, responsibility for mitigation efforts, and acceptability of appeals to shame and guilt are negotiat…
The Worth of Nature
This article presents a comparative case study of public valuation of glaciers in Alaska and Norway. The first case examines Alaska’s Mendenhall Glacier, which has been central in public debate over the US Forest Service’s proposed expansion of the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. The second case centers on Norway’s Svartisen glacier, which garnered international attention when the startup company, Svaice, announced its intent to extract glaci…
Seeking Consensus on Confusing and Contentious Issues
In this paper, I examine how young people in Norway, an affluent nation in the global north with long traditions of acknowledging the young as citizens, articulate and negotiate agency and norms for practicing environmental citizenship. Combining focus groups and qualitative surveys, I explore how Norwegian youth experience and engage with public environmental debates. Results show that many perceive environmental issues, particularly climate cha…
Influencer responsibility in practice
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many governments discouraged citizens from travelling both within and outside the nation in an effort to mitigate the spread of the virus. Still, some Scandinavian influencers, whose livelihood often depends on producing aesthetic travel content, chose to go abroad, which led to criticism from both followers and others. While ethical debates over air travel have taken place in social media for a long time, the specif…
'Well, That’s Just My Opinion'
The public debate is commonly criticised for lacking deliberation. Therefore, I argue, we need a better understanding of the rhetorical modes occurring instead of deliberation. By examining the interaction in a particularly expressive arena for public debate, namely public comment fields on Facebook, I suggest that the term 'principle of expression' to describe a discursive ideal that directly counteracts the ideal of deliberative disagreement by…
Meni…
Hostility online
Whereas the amount of hostility found online increases, scholarly interest in online hostility is decreasing. In this paper, I discuss three questions central to the study of online hostility, namely 1) what role the text, the speaker’s intention and the targets’ perception should play in definitions of hostility; 2) whether hostility is always destructive or if it can also be productive in public debate; and 3) how to distinguish between destruc…
Opplysningens retorikk
What does it mean to argue well? This is one of the central questions asked in studies of rhetoric. This article contributes to this discussion. Seeing the domain of rhetoric argumentation as questions discussed in the public sphere, and considering its main function being to enable citizens to make well-informed choices in these matters, I discuss which rhetorical devices that can be seen as legitimate in political debates. In order to do this, …
