  • Tokenised kitsch

Open Access•Reilly Smethurst, Orestis Papageorgiou et al.•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2025

Blockchain-tokenised media is kitsch. We examined OpenSea’s top 50 collections of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as well as the first two NFTs acquired by New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). We concomitantly developed two concepts: oppositional kitsch, and historically informed kitsch. OpenSea’s profile picture collections exemplify oppositional kitsch: they are described by their creators as anti-normal, degenerate or animalistic. CryptoPunks an…

  • Tokenistic Decentralisation or Non-Tokenistic Distributism

Open Access•Reilly Smethurst, Tom Barbereau et al.•ARTICLE•tripleC Communication Capitalism…•2025

Yanis Varoufakis wrote a science fiction novel, Another Now: Dispatches from an Alternative Present, to encourage post-capitalist political projects in our so-called real world. Costa, a protagonist from the novel, invents a portal that enables communication between his universe and a parallel universe. The two universes diverged after the global financial crisis in 2008. Private money networks like Bitcoin emerged in Costa’s capitalist universe,…

  • The Metaverse’s Thirtieth Anniversary

    Open Access•Reilly Smethurst, Tom Barbereau et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2023

The metaverse is equivocal. It is a science-fictional concept from the past; it is the present’s rough implementations; and it is the Promised Cyberland, expected to manifest some time in the future. The metaverse first emerged as a techno-capitalist network in a 1992 science fiction novel by Neal Stephenson. Our article thus marks the metaverse’s thirtieth anniversary. We revisit Stephenson’s original concept plus three sophisticated antecedents…

  • Decentralised Finance’s timocratic governance

    Open Access•Tom Barbereau, Reilly Smethurst et al.•ARTICLE•Technology in Society•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 43

Ethereum’s public distributed ledger can issue tokenised voting rights that are tradable on crypto-asset exchanges by potentially anyone. Ethereum thus enables global, unincorporated associations to conduct governance experiments. Such experiments are crucial to Decentralised Finance (DeFi). DeFi is a nascent field of unlicensed, unregulated, and non-custodial financial services that utilise public distributed ledgers and crypto-assets rather tha…
