  • A dynamic factor model of international tourist arrivals

    Open Access•James E Payne, Blythe Markel et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2026

This study employs the dynamic factor model (DFM) to examine the comovements in international tourist arrivals per capita. Previously unexplored in the tourism literature, the DFM enables the estimation of both global and regional factors, shedding light on their respective impacts on a country’s tourist arrivals. The analysis reveals that, on average, during the pre-COVID-19 period, the global factor explained nearly 87% of the variation in inte…

  • A simplified machine learning model to forecast individual thermal comfort in older adults’ residential spaces without relying on wearable devices

Open Access•Junsoo Lee, Seungwon Seo et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2025

  • Global perspective on the permanent or transitory nature of shocks to tourist arrivals: Evidence from new unit root tests with structural breaks and factors

    Open Access•James E Payne, Junsoo Lee•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2024

This study extends the literature on the permanent or transitory nature of shocks to per capita tourist arrivals along several dimensions. First, the study evaluates the nature of shocks to per capita tourist arrivals for a global panel of 129 countries. Second, unlike previous studies, we jointly estimate structural changes that represent either abrupt breaks or as a Fourier approximation of smooth breaks along with introducing a factor structur…

  • A machine learning-based forecasting model for personal maximum allowable exposure time under extremely hot environments

Open Access•Yujin Choi, Seungwon Seo et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2024

Continuous work time control is crucial for preventing heat-related illnesses outdoors. • Machine learning was applied to forecast personal maximum allowable exposure time. • The proposed model improved forecast accuracy by incorporating biometric characteristics. • The most reliable model achieved a low mean absolute error (MAE) of just 11 seconds. • Personalized heat stress management strategy is now feasible for construction workers. As global…

  • A living lab to develop smart home services for the residential welfare of older adults

    Open Access•Seokho Hong, Eunha Jang et al.•ARTICLE•Technology in Society•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 58

  • A Comparison of the Female and Male Racial Disparities in Imprisonment

Open Access•Junsoo Lee, Paul Pecorino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economics Race and…•2022•References: 2

  • Coronavirus Disease 2019 Outbreak in a Psychiatric Closed Ward: What We Have to Learn

Open Access•June Young Chun, Jin Yong Jun et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

An outbreak of COVID-19 with an extremely high attack rate happened in a psychiatric closed ward. One hundred two (98.1%) out of 104 patients were diagnosed with COVID-19 between February 20th and 26th, 2020, most of whom were with schizophrenia. Facility factors (such as multi-share rooms, closed windows, and absence of alcohol hand rubs), along with chronic medical conditions, and difficulty to explain symptoms for psychiatric patients might ha…

  • A Unit Root Test Using a Fourier Series to Approximate Smooth Breaks

Open Access•Walter Enders, Junsoo Lee•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2012

We develop a unit‐root test based on a simple variant of Gallant's (1981) flexible Fourier form. The test relies on the fact that a series with several smooth structural breaks can often be approximated using the low frequency components of a Fourier expansion. Hence, it is possible to test for a unit root without having to model the precise form of the break. Our unit‐root test employing Fourier approximation has good size and power for the type…

  • The flexible Fourier form and Dickey–Fuller type unit root tests

    Open Access•Walter Enders, Junsoo Lee•ARTICLE•Economics Letters•2012

  • Involvement of heme oxygenase-1 in the anti-inflammatory activity of Chrysanthemum boreale Makino extracts on the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in RAW264.7 macrophages

Open Access•Younghwa Kim, Jeehye Sung et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2010

  • A Stationarity Test in the Presence of an Unknown Number of Smooth Breaks

Open Access•Ralf Becker, Walter Enders et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Time Series Analysis•2006

Macroeconomic variables have been shown to display a wide variety of structural breaks of unknown number, duration and form. This poses a challenge since improperly modelled breaks can result in a seriously misspecified model. In this paper, we develop a new test for stationarity that approximates the unknown form of structural breaks using a selected frequency component from a Fourier approximation. Our proposed test performs quite well when bre…

  • Minimum Lagrange Multiplier Unit Root Test with Two Structural Breaks

Junsoo Lee, Mark C Strazicich•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2003

The endogenous two-break unit root test of Lumsdaine and Papell is derived assuming no structural breaks under the null. Thus, rejection of the null does not necessarily imply rejection of a unit root per se, but may imply rejection of a unit root without break. Similarly, the alternative does not necessarily imply trend stationarity with breaks, but may indicate a unit root with breaks. In this paper, we propose an endogenous two-break Lagrange …
