Towards multi-scalar transition management? Insights from four transition arenas in Norway’s port sector
Transition management has been applied at organisational, local, regional, and national scales. However, transition management methodology only treats scale in passing. Drawing upon experiences from four transition arenas in Norway’s port sector – three local, one national – the article describes how arena outputs differed between local and national arenas. Outputs from the national arena were significantly less specific than in the local arenas.…
Policies shaping energy transitions in ports and harbours: A 'whole systems' perspective from Norway
Current climate and energy policies aim for zero emission ports, emphasizing their key role in sustainable energy transition. However, the future demand and supply of energy is uncertain. The long-term interaction between transition policies, regulations, and techno-economic trends is difficult to foresee, making it challenging for ports to prioritise between alternative solutions and strategies. Moreover, ports are situated in local contexts, wi…
Strategies for circular economy in the Nordics: A comparative analysis of directionality
In this paper we mobilize sustainability transitions literature to explore directionality for circular economy (CE) transitions, by drawing on and adapting a framework for analysing roadmaps to empirically investigate CE strategies. Specifically, this paper explores circular economy CE strategy documents in the Nordics, the commonalities and differences between them and to what extent they provide directionality for CE transitions. Through a syst…
Digital innovation's contribution to sustainability transitions
Digital innovation is increasingly mentioned as a potential key contributor to sustainability transitions. However, there has been little theoretical discussion of this topic. In this conceptual paper, the authors draw on literature on both sustainability transition studies and innovation studies to explore critically the contribution of digital innovation in sustainability transitions. They conceptualize transitions as fundamental changes in pat…
