  • Community and Participatory Evidence and Research Synthesis

    Open Access•Jason C Chow, Ruben G Martinez•ARTICLE•Educational Psychology Review•2026

This paper introduces Community and Participatory Evidence and Research Synthesis (CAPERS), a prospective mixed-methods framework that intentionally engages community partners to improve the relevance, usability, and implementation readiness of research syntheses in educational psychology. CAPERS provides a structured yet flexible approach for integrating community-based participatory methods into evidence synthesis at multiple points in the rese…

  • Preparedness of Special Education Teacher Educators and Teacher Candidates to Teach Mathematics to English Learners

Open Access•Yang Fu, Jason C Chow et al.•ARTICLE•Learning Disabilities Research &…•2026

As classrooms across the USA become increasingly diverse, special education teacher preparation programs must ensure that teacher candidates are equipped to teach mathematics to English learners (ELs) with disabilities. We review evidence-based practices for teaching ELs with mathematics disabilities and report findings from a survey examining special education teacher educators’ and teacher candidates’ readiness to support ELs with disabilities …

  • Item Response Theory Analysis of the Classroom Level Adversity Scale

    Open Access•Allyson L Hayward, Kristen L Granger et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2026

The Classroom Level Adversity Scale (CLA) captures teachers' perceptions of the overall needs and challenges present in their classrooms. It reflects a collective classroom characteristic based on teacher report, providing insight into the degree of ecological risk teachers perceive when working with their students. The CLA was developed to advance the measurement of teachers' perceptions of classroom stressors and has been used to investigate as…

  • Decrypting the Codes

Open Access•Garret J Hall, Wilhelmina Van Dijk et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2025

Relations of reading and math skills are well‐documented. Using open randomized reading intervention data, we examined a reading intervention's impact on math fluency and problem‐solving as well as the mechanisms of reading intervention's relation to math fluency. Twenty‐eight teachers and 511 first‐grade students (82% White, 6% Hispanic, 53% Female, Age M[SD] = 6.7[0.45]) were randomized to reading treatment or a math intervention control group.…

  • Child gender and challenging behavior influences early childhood teachers' use of behavior specific praise

    Open Access•Kristen L Granger, Melissa Washington‐Nortey et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2024

This study used data from 435 teacher‐child dyads in early childhood classrooms to examine the extent to which teachers' use of behavior specific praise (BSP) with children screened for elevated rates of externalizing behaviors was influenced by the intensity of child challenging behavior and gender. Observational assessments indicated that teachers used BSP infrequently. A multiple regression model revealed a significant association between the …

  • The developmental mutualism of language skills and behavioral problems

Peng Peng, Jason Chow et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2024

  • The relation between reading and externalizing behavior

    Open Access•Sage E Pickren, Jessica N Torelli et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2024

Reading proficiency is important because it has life-long consequences and influences success in other academic areas. Many students with behavior problems are poor readers and many students with learning disabilities have more behavior problems than their typical peers. We conducted a correlational meta-analysis to examine the association between reading and externalizing behavior in students ages 5–12. We identified 33 studies that reported 88 …

  • A Systematic Review of Characteristics of Students With Emotional Disturbance in Special Education Research

Open Access•Jason C Chow, Ashley Morse et al.•ARTICLE•Remedial and Special Education•2023

We conducted a systematic literature review examining the participant characteristics of studies of students with emotional disturbance (ED) with the purpose of better understanding potential similarities and differences between students with ED in research and the population of students with ED. Results indicate (a) participants with reported demographics were predominantly White or Black/African American and male; (b) participants in research s…

  • A Synthesis of Professional Development Targeting Literacy Instruction and Intervention for English Learners

Open Access•Alexandra Shelton, Erin Hogan et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2023

An important way to address the literacy needs of English learners (ELs) is to ensure that ELs receive evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention. To support teachers’ implementation of this instruction and intervention, it is necessary to provide effective professional development (PD). In this systematic review, we synthesized 19 studies that investigated PD on literacy instruction and intervention for ELs. Findings revealed that alth…

  • The state of evidence for social and emotional learning

    Open Access•Christina Cipriano, Michael J Strambler et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2023

This article provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current evidence for universal school-based (USB) social and emotional learning (SEL) interventions for students in kindergarten through 12th grade available from 2008 through 2020. The sample includes 424 studies from 53 countries, reflecting 252 discrete USB SEL interventions, involving 575,361 students. Results endorsed that, compared to control conditions, students who partici…

  • A Case for Early Language and Behavior Screening

    Open Access•Ann P Kaiser, Jason C Chow et al.•ARTICLE•Policy Insights from the…•2022

Early language skills and prosocial behavior contribute to positive outcomes across the lifespan. Screening has improved the identification and early intervention (EI) for children with hearing loss, autism spectrum disorders, and genetically based disabilities. However, many children with significant functional impairments in language and behavior are not identified before school entry. These children have missed a critical window for EI that mi…

  • Deeply Tailoring Adaptive Interventions

    Open Access•Lauren H Hampton, Jason C Chow•ARTICLE•Remedial and Special Education•2022

Special educators serve a diverse population of students with unique strengths and needs, and adaptive interventions that account for individual differences before and during the intervention are an important tool to moving the field toward more individualized practices. The purpose of this article is to detail the conceptualization and application of tailoring the sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) design approach to develop…
